The two of them met in Lund, Sweden while studying at the university. Nowadays Annica is living in Stockholm and Martin in Malmö. This, however, is no problem, since they're more of a studio band than a live act, they both assure. The band is writing fresh sounding electronic pop music in the vein of Dubstar and Saint Etienne. Martin is writing most of the songs while Annica is using her mesmerizing voice to complete their music.

Waltz for Debbie released the CD-single »He Loves Anna« on Labrador in July 1999 and in January this year their follow-up »Once upon time« reached the stores. It was a big radio-hit in Sweden. 10 weeks on P3's charts. Both singles appear on their debut album, released the 13th of June 2000. It's called »Gone and Out« and contains 10 of the catchiest poptunes since….. Waltz For Debbie has previously released the CD single »You & I & Brett & Alice« on Stockholm Records.

So I think it's great that people are just rediscovering Bill Evans, and I want people to rediscover Bill Evans. Dude this is just amazing, the writing is just masterful, especially the chord progression. The chord progression is based off such basic musical concepts combined to create a complex sound. For example, the very beginning where he descends are poly chords starting on G/A and going down chromatically, but the chords go up in the circle of fourths staring on A. I will definitely use this in my improvisation but it creates such different colours and is beautiful. It’s hard to imagine how intelligent Bill Evans was. One of the best, if not the best Jazz pianists.

Yah! regarding that progression, and the "chromatic" descent, which it totally is, but.. as you also point out, it's actually a "circle of 4ths" progression. I came across it myself as the "falling 5th" sequence (which, spelled in the opposite direction is obviously rising 4ths - I love the beauty of nature as expressed through musical harmony!!) Anyway, you can go on improvising on falling circle of 5ths forever, and with some tonal variation and chromaticism, it can be incredibly flexible in where it goes (like 12-bar blues!). Anyway, if I were teaching someone about jazz harmony - tonal harmony in general- after simple scale chord tones, I would suggest hammering this progression (falling 5th = rising 4th = descending 1/2 step every second chord) for all itt's worth. Which is a lot! I love your observation about the harmony and progression!

Also it’s cool to syncopate simple melodic motifs over this and let these beautiful substitute chords do the work.

Also try a repeating F major pentatonic motif at “A-, Fmaj7, Bb, A...” Again make the chords do the heavy lifting.

Since finding Bill Evans in 1967, I have continue to be amazed by his gentle, complex playing music. Waltz for Debby has had the most impact on me , but there are so many of his works/performances that became markers in my life and continue to make me grateful he wrote/played them. Fantastic! What else could it be with this magnificent trio? They use (or should I say Bill Evans) uses an unbelievably effective device just a few bars from the end of the first full chorus. As we know, the tune is originally a waltz (in 3/4 time), but there is a sort of coda inserted into the tune, that isn't really a coda, but which Bill uses to convert his own 3/4 piece into a Swing 4/4, just before the trio reach the second chorus. That sets the tenor of the rest of the tune, with Scott La Faro taking the first solo - which is one of the best bass solos I've heard from a bassist in the whole of my life. There is wonderful sympathetic drumming from Paul M. on drums, especially during the solos of Evans La Faro. He is a listening drummer, and although we only hear his supportive backing for bass and piano, his technique shines through like a beacon in the night. What a wonderful tune, and what a wonderful recording!

Tom Reeves Hello JohnST9. Yes, I have learnt to my shame, that it wasn't La Faro. Apparently Scott had died in July 1961, and the BBC London recording was made later. So I concede defeat. I had never seen the Trio in the flesh, so I had no idea what anyone except Bill Evans looked like. I was told that it was Chuck Israels on this recording. So I stand corrected and in great shame for all time!!! We never really stop learning; but the important thing in the end is the Truth, not supposition. Best wishes. Joe S-M.

Truly a master playing a masterpiece. Kinda Blue was really more a Bill Evans album than it was Miles Davis in my mind as many of the tunes and style were truly of Bill.

Hearing performances like that in the 50's opened my eyes to jazz. Listening to the music while participating in your mind with the musician is the essence. With Evans you could always follow the underlying melody but mentally experiment with him as he added lyrical passages and unexpected harmonies. One of the best.

I love the most repeated point of this video is the start. It means every replayed the song over and over again. Which is just wholesome and great because this is just amazing.
