The Great Speckled Bird
Wanda Jackson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What a beautiful thought I am thinking concerning the great speckled bird
Remember her name is recorded on the pages of God's holy word
Desiring to lower her standards they watch every move that she makes
But they long to find fault with her teaching but really they find no mistakes

I am glad I have learned of her meekness I am proud that my name is on her book
For I want to be one never fearing the face of my Savior's true look
When he comes descending from heaven on the cloud as he write in his word
I'll be joyfully carried to meet him on the wings of the great speckled bird

Overall Meaning

The Great Speckled Bird is a gospel song written by Reverend Guy Smith in 1936. Wanda Jackson's version was released in 1962 and it quickly became a hit. The lyrics are a metaphorical representation of the Christian faith and the struggles faced by those who stand by their beliefs despite pressure to conform or change. The "great speckled bird" is used to symbolize those who choose to follow a different path that is not widely accepted or popular.

The song opens with the singer expressing admiration for the great speckled bird and its place in God's holy word. The bird represents a group of people who are constantly watched by those who are critical of their teaching and beliefs. Despite the scrutiny, the bird remains steadfast and committed to its standards. The singer feels proud to have their name associated with the bird and wants to be part of the group of people who are faithful to their beliefs.

The second part of the song talks about the return of Jesus and the hope of being carried on the wings of the great speckled bird to meet him. This symbolizes the hope of salvation and the reward for being faithful. The song speaks to the idea that staying true to one's beliefs can be challenging, but the reward is worth it.

What a beautiful thought I am thinking
Concerning a great speckled bird
Remember her name is recorded
On the pages of God's Holy Word.

All the other birds are flocking 'round her
And she is despised by the squad
But the great speckled bird in the Bible
Is one with the great church of God.

All the other churches are against her
They envy her glory and fame
They hate her because she is chosen
And has not denied Jesus' name.

Desiring to lower her standard
They watch every move that she makes
They long to find fault with her teachings
But really they find no mistake.

She is spreading her wings for a journey
She's going to leave by and by
When the trumpet shall sound in the morning
She'll rise and go up in the sky.

In the presence of all her despisers
With a song never uttered before
She will rise and be gone in a moment
Till the great tribulation is o'er.

I am glad I have learned of her meekness
I am proud that my name is on her book
For I want to be one never fearing
The face of my Savior to look.

When He cometh descending from heaven
On the cloud that He writes in His Word
I'll be joyfully carried to meet Him
On the wings of that great speckled bird.

Mine heritage is unto me as a speckled bird, the birds round about are against her; come ye, assemble all the beasts of the field, come to devour.
Jeremiah 12:9 KJV

Love Wanda's version of this song. I love Wanda's pure voice.

Georel Bonai

Love this song it has the same rhythm as Kitty Wells's "It wasn't god who made honky tonk angels" almost every old country use this same rhythm. No wonder it really easy to practice this on guitar because it only has three chord C, F, G for beginners.
