There's A New Moon Over My Shoulder
Wanda Jackson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a new moon over my shoulder
And an old love still in my heart

I remember now that I'm older
What you told me the day we had to part

You promised with the new moon
You'd be coming back to me
Now many moons have passed
Since then I'm waiting patiently

There's a new moon over my shoulder
And an old love still in my heart

So I'll keep on praying
For your safe return someday
And that we'll be the same sweethearts
As when you went away

There's a new moon over my shoulder
And an old love still in my heart

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Wanda Jackson's song There's A New Moon Over My Shoulder are about a love that has been left behind, but not forgotten. The beginning of the song describes a new moon in the sky, but there is still an old love in the singer's heart. As the song continues, the memory of the lost love is discussed. The singer remembers what the lost love told them when they had to part. They promised to come back, but many moons have passed since then and the singer is still patiently waiting for their return.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "there's a new moon over my shoulder and an old love still in my heart." This phrase ties in with the memory of the lost love and how the singer is still thinking about them. The song ends with the singer keeping the faith that the lost love will return and that they will be reunited as sweethearts once again.

The lyrics to this song capture the emotions of waiting for someone who has left, but not giving up on the hope of their return. It showcases how love can be timeless and how it can linger even when it is not present. The use of the new moon serves as a symbol of new beginnings and hope for the future.

Wanda at her best!
(This is of course a technicality, but although it sounds
atmospheric and romantic to have a new moon over your
shoulder, and some think the moon is
shining over your shoulder
from the position in
which you are located, a "new moon" is the exact moment when all moonlight disappears
after the moon has waned, and it begins
it's new cycle of waxing gibbous until
it becomes a full moon again. At the
time I began writing
this the moon was 66
percent full. Bottom line is, if you are outdoors during a "new moon" you are
not able to see it
to know whether or not it is actually over your shoulder, or
just where it
is in the sky, although
astronomers surely
have a method of finding out. But symbolically to fit
the purpose of the song, a new moon brings with it
the beginning of a new cycle of light, and hopefully, the
renewal of lost love and its brightening
glory.

THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING
GRUMPY ABOUT MY SIMPLY POINTING OUT WHAT I DID, IN A VERY POLITE WAY.

I WAS THINKING OF YOU TOO WHILE SCROLLING AROUND TO GIVE YOU RECOMMENDATIONS.
GOOGLE DANNY WILLIAMS ON "STORY OF A STARRY NIGHT" ON THE FELIX BAUTISTA CHANNEL. BE SURE AND WATCH BOTH VIDEOS,
WHICH HAVE DIFFERENT
VIDEOS OF THE SAME SONG. ONE VIDEO HAS A THUMBNAIL OF A CELESTIAL BODY, THE OTHER A THUMBNAIL OF
TWO MEN. I ALSO LEFT A REMARK AN HOUR OR SO AGO ON THE JAN HOWARD SONG, "THE NIGHT WATCH", ON THE BE MISTY CHANNEL.
CHEERS!
YOUR FRIEND ALWAYS!

Tex Ritter popularized this
1944 country classic, but Wanda Jackson
turned in my favorite performance.
Song was written by Governor Jimmie Davis, Ekko Whelan, and
Lee Blastic.
