For Your Love
Wanderers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Goldstein/Treganna)
See you round for the last time
First time in a different light
Found the time to ask myself
Is this vision right
When we met three years ago
I thought you were so cool
I could sense that hidden power
Power to lead the human race
Turn off your old transistor
You've had your chance now mister
You've gone and sold your soul to fame
The cards are on the table now
Your luck is ending fast
Someone else had marked the pack
I guess you know it wouldn't last
High up your pedestal
You thought you really had it sussed
A pillar of society
Don't you know that power corrupts (absolutely)
And now's the time you're gonna fall, watch you fall
You were such a nervous guy too dumb to suss it out
You gone and sold your soul for fame
You're safe now in your solitude
A sittin by the pool
Your friends are bought your foes in court
A havin broke your rules
Tryin to make you see the truth
Your blind to reality

Wrapped up warm in cotton residue
There's nothign left inside you

Overall Meaning

The Wanderers' song "For Your Love" is a ballad that explores the idea of the price of fame and power. The song is primarily about someone who has lost themselves in the pursuit of fame and power, and now feels trapped in their solitude. The lyrics begin with the singer's last encounter with this person, who they've known for three years. The first verse describes the situation in which the two meet, "First time in a different light/Found the time to ask myself/Is this vision right." The second verse mentions the person's power to be a leader and a "pillar of society," but also alludes to the corruption that comes with power when it reads, "Don't you know that power corrupts (absolutely)."

The chorus of the song is where the singer questions this person’s choices and the path that they have taken in the pursuit of fame. They claim that the person has sold their soul for fame, and that it has ultimately made them blind to reality, "Tryin' to make you see the truth/Your blind to reality/Wrapped up warm in cotton residue/There's nothin' left inside you." The verse then ends with an ominous warning that their luck is coming to an end, "The cards are on the table now/Your luck is ending fast/Someone else had marked the pack/I guess you know it wouldn't last." Essentially, the singer is trying to make the person see the error of their ways before it is too late.

I adore this Doo Wop group. The lead singer has such a unique, beautiful and haunting kind of sound that you can never forget.🎢🎢🎢🎢

Kwame Johnson

His name is Ray Pollard. He had quite a few solo singles as well.

M Mcgann

Just happened onto this record a few years ago. What a great rendtion of the classic ballad. I like this and Ed Townsend's version equally. Ray just floats on those great notes and phrases and the BG vocals and base player round it all out perfectly.

One of my all time Doo Wop songs, beautiful words and fantastic singing, What a harmony......

Anthony DiFrancesco

What a great platform! Not only for we "oldies and still goodies" to reminisce, but also, for sons to honor their fathers.

I lknow Ed Townsend covered this song in 1958. But The Wanders version that stuck in My Mind - For You Love by The Wanders is such a Doo Wop song. - they don’t make records like this anymore and that’s a shame makes me glad that I grew up in the late 50’s and 60’s when Doo Wop was the music on the radio - in those days it was only AM radio stations - but the music was unbelievable then. Long Live Doop Wop
