Don't Let Go
Wang Chung Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I felt so scared to
Pick up the paper knife and read within
I read the contents
I got what you meant
I know its hard for you but don't give in
Maybe, maybe slow things go fast
Maybe, maybe its all in the past
Chorus:
Oh oh if you need me don't let go - oh
(You know I'll never give up on you)
Oh oh if you need me don't let go - oh
(You know I won't give up on you)
oo oo - oo oo oo - oo
You know I'll never give up on you
I phoned the station
For information
To try and get the times of trains to York
And on the platform
I saw your hatform
A kind of halo in the crowd - crush talk
But baby baby don't run away
Maybe, maybe it's just today
Repeat Chorus
I saw your sad face
You dropped your suitcase
And I appreciate the state you're in
You mustn't hurry
You mustn't worry
I know it's hard on you but don't give in
Maybe, maybe slow things go fast
Maybe, maybe its all in the past
The opening lines of Wang Chung's song "Don't Let Go" highlight the anxiety and fear felt on receiving a letter with potentially distressing news. The singer feels it might contain bad news, and is hesitant to open it, even resorting to using a paper knife to do so. The contents reveal the sender's struggle, indicating a difficult time for them but still asking the recipient to hold on, not to give in. The song could be seen as a message of encouragement to someone who is going through a hard time, suggesting that even if it is difficult now, things will get better.
The second verse tells us that the singer heads to the station to try and find the recipient of the letter. They see the personβs hat in the crowd and seem to only want to provide comfort and support. At this point, the singer understands that the sender wants to leave as they see the suitcase. But the singer again shares a message of hope saying that maybe things will get better in time.
The catchy, upbeat chorus explicitly states the song's message of support and encouragement to the person going through a tough time. The singer insists that they will not give up on the person and encourages them to hold on by declaring that they will be there for them. These lyrics indicate a deep level of commitment and responsibility that the singer feels towards the sender. The repetition of the lines βif you need me, donβt let goβ and βIβll never give up on youβ reinforces the message of the song.
