Pieter Breughel In Brussel

Kapot was 't vensterglas
Vol kleur had doen ontstaan
En daarop stond geschilderd
Ne Vlaming in't gevang
The song Pieter Breughel in Brussel by Wannes Van De Velde is a nostalgic and poignant tribute to the famous Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The song imagines Bruegel coming back to life and returning to his native land to witness its current state, and the painter is depicted as feeling wistful and melancholic about the changes he observes. Bruegel is portrayed as lamenting the loss of Dutch and Flemish culture in Brussels due to French influence, exemplified by a café owner who cannot understand his Brabants dialect. Throughout the song, the lyrics evoke vivid images of the painter's memories of his home, his feelings of displacement, and his appreciation for his craft.
The lyrics of Pieter Breughel in Brussel are rich in symbolism and metaphors that capture the essence of Bruegel's art and legacy. The song highlights Bruegel's humanistic vision and his ability to depict ordinary people in their daily lives, as seen in the line "Ne Vlaming in't gevang" ("A Fleming in prison") that alludes to the painter's famous depiction of prisoners in his work. The song also captures the painter's sense of disillusionment with the world, as he observes the wars and conflicts that have persisted since his death.

My Flemish friend gets me into all this good music. Not sure if many Americans listen to this but i do lol.

I do. I'm Flemish / American, my family on my Father's side immigrated to Wisconsin in the 1800's, Green Bay and surrounding areas are heavily Flemish, not they care much about it anymore.
