There Must Be A Reason
War Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I don't know
There must be a reason why
I don't know
Spend my life in misery
Loving you
Spend my life in misery
"Jesus"
Jesus gave my life to give
Not to you
Jesus gave my life to him
Not to you
"Lost my soul"
Lost my soul in '68
Where were you?
Lost my soul in '68
Where were you?
"Reason"
There must be a reason why
I don't know
[Repeat to end]
The lyrics to War's song "There Must Be A Reason" speak to the confusion and frustration the singer feels about their relationship with their loved one. The repetition of the line "There must be a reason why I don't know" highlights the singer's uncertainty about why they are experiencing so much pain while still loving this person. The line "Spend my life in misery loving you" further emphasizes this contradiction - despite the anguish, the singer is unable to let go of their love.
The mention of Jesus in the lyrics adds a spiritual element to the song. The lines "Jesus gave my life to give not to you / Jesus gave my life to him not to you" suggest that the singer may feel torn between their love for this person and their religious beliefs. This tension is echoed in the line "Lost my soul in '68 where were you?" which implies that the singer feels they have strayed from their path and their loved one was not there to help or support them.
Overall, the lyrics to "There Must Be A Reason" express a complex mix of emotions - love, pain, confusion, and spiritual conflict. The lack of a clear answer to the central question of the song ("There must be a reason why I don't know") conveys a sense of helplessness and resignation, as if the singer has accepted that some mysteries cannot be explained.
