"War Against Sleep (aka Duncan Fleming) has been doing the songwriting thing for a decade now. In this time, he's released but one single on Silent Age records. In Italy.Otherwise he exists like a ghost on Bristol's scene, appearing behind a piano, playing smart songs – both in intelligence and the hot pain of a slap against the face – and then disappearing into the night. But things change. Fire, 2004 has offered a single – the rough street grandeur-pop pout of 'Again Love Smashes Up My Mind', whose verses alternate between black sociopathy and blank beatification (the point being, of course, both are just contrasting examples of love doing that smashing up the mind thing). And now, an album: 'Messages', recorded with assorted Bristol luminaries (Jesse Morningstar, Rasha Mooz and Patrick Strangelove, incestuous small city England fans). This is where I entered this particular tale and, most likely, where you will too. This is what happened."
Suffering
War Against Sleep Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The flavor of all the years.
Breath is flying away.
Life is ending today.
No more suffering.
No more suffering only love.
Through lives you don't understand.
The mysteries of this land.
Life is ending today.
No more suffering.
No more suffering only love.
The lyrics of War Against Sleep's song "Suffering" seem to convey a sense of finality and resignation to the end of life. The imagery of taste disappearing and colors fading away give a sense of losing one's senses or awareness, while the repetition of "life is ending today" reinforces the idea of mortality. However, there is also a glimmer of hope in the chorus, with the assertion that "no more suffering, only love."
The second verse introduces an element of mystery or complexity to the lyrics, with the line "through lives you don't understand, the mysteries of this land." This could be interpreted in a number of ways - perhaps it refers to the knowledge and experiences of others that we can never fully comprehend, or to the hidden or unknown aspects of the world around us. Ultimately, though, the song seems to focus on accepting the inevitability of death and finding peace in the absence of suffering.
