Out Come The Freaks
Was (Not Was) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Little Rita and her sister Betty
Met some mook who drove a purple Chevy
He took them for a ride one summer night (Are you angry?)
Told the girls he was a big producer
Truth be told he was a cheap seducer
He drove them to the hills to see the lights
(Heh, heh, heh, yeah, right)
Two days later they were reading him his rights
(Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks) Shot
Out come the freaks
(Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks) Oh yeah

Tara Venus was a rent a stripper
You could feast your eyes but you couldn't grip her
She went nowhere without Jack the human knife
He'd slice you silly if you got too friendly
If you value living better treat her gently
Once she does her sexy cha-cha let her go

She will tempt you (uh-huh) but it's just part of the show
(Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks)
Out come the freaks, yo, yeah
(Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks)
Oh yeah, oh, do, yeah

Bobby Maggot was a big attorney
Through the courtroom down to hell he journeyed
Bald headed piece of garbage that he was. (Ha, ha, ha!)
[Woof! Woof! Woof!] (Bad, bad boy!)
He'll defend you if your money's honest
Says he'll do his best but that's no promise
Off he goes in his Corvette to get a tan

Oh Lord I ask you what kind of beast is man?
(Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks)
Oh, out come the freaks, out come the freaks, y'all
(Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks)
Out come the freaks, yeah
(Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks)
Out come the freaks, y'all
(Woodwork squeaks and out comes Trotsky)
Out comes Trotsky, yeah
(Woodwork squeaks and out comes Coltrane)
Coltrane, Coltrane, out comes Coltrane
(Woodwork squeaks and out comes Che Guevara)
Che Guevara, Che Guevara, oh
(Woodwork squeaks and out comes the Powell)

Buddy Powell, Buddy Powell, baby, yeah
Out come the freaks

Overall Meaning

The song "Out Come The Freaks" by Was (Not Was) is a sarcastic commentary on the various oddities of human behavior. Through three different stories of peculiar individuals, the song highlights how each of their actions matter in the grand scheme of things. The first verse introduces Little Rita and her sister Betty, who are manipulated by a man who claims to be a big producer but is in fact just using them for his own cheap desires. The second verse speaks of Tara Venus, a rent-a-stripper who is accompanied by her dangerous partner, Jack the human knife. The last character introduced is Bobby Maggot, a bald-headed and greedy attorney who only defends those with money.

The lyrics take a humorous approach in addressing these situations, introducing all the characters as "freaks" but also highlighting the darker aspects of their personalities. The repeated line "woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks" implies that these types of people are always around and present in society, ready to come out and surprise us. Ultimately, the song critiques human behavior and our strange predilections towards oddities and perversions.

Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
When the sun goes down they hit the streets in the bars to try and meet
Some other stranger to ease the pain
Of living alone till it drives them insane
The woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Yeah, the woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Like little Michael on his motorcycle with leather pants & a leather brain
He aint never been the same since Vietnam
Keeps his heart locked-up in a vest and his eyes inside his shoes
Doesnt ever want to lose them in a fight
You never know what might go down tonight
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Open the door & theres Suzanne, she eats her breakfast from the pan
She never even burns her tongue
And someday shed like to get hung up on a millionaire
She dont even care if he aint got no hair
She says Long as he signs the checks
I figure what the heck, Ill get him a toupee What more can you say?
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks (Ha ha ha ha)
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Detroit Johnny dont wear no tie, cause he says it hurts his neck
Hes got a chick from Ecuador tonight
She wants to talk about the moon, she says it used to be her friend
But the doctors put an end to all of that
(A part of me is lost for good, do you really understand?)
I do says Johnny as he grabs her hand
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Woodwork squeaks and out come the freaks
Out come the freaks...
Out come the freaks...
Out come the freaks...
Out come the freaks...
Out come the freaks...
