Teach me tonight
Washington Dinah Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Well, don't think I'm trying not to learn
Since this is the perfect spot to learn
Ooh, teach me tonight
Let's start with the A-B-C of it
Getting right down to the X-Y-Z of it
Help me solve the mystery of it
The sky's a blackboard high above you
If a shooting star goes by
I'll use that star to write, I love you
A thousand times across the sky
One thing isn't very clear, my love
Should the teachers stand so near, my love
Graduation's almost here, my love
Come on and teach me tonight
I'll use that star to write, I love you
A thousand times across the sky
One thing isn't very clear, my love
Should the teachers stand so near, my love
Graduation's almost here, my love
Teach me, please teach me tonight
The lyrics of the song "Teach Me Tonight" by Washington Dinah talks about a person who is eager to learn from their loved one. The opening lines of the song indicate that the singer has been told they have a lot to learn, but they are not resisting the idea of learning. Instead, they want to learn from their loved one in the perfect setting, which the singer believes is tonight. Asking their loved one to teach them, the singer finds the perfect moment to start with the basics, as represented by the A-B-C of it, and getting right down to the X-Y-Z of it. They want to understand the mystery of it.
The song's second verse creates a beautiful imagery of a starry sky. The singer likens the sky- a blackboard high above you to a writing platform. Using the shooting stars as pen and ink, the singer expresses their love a thousand times across the sky. The singer then goes on to say that one thing isn't clear- whether the teacher should stand near during their love lesson. The song ends with a playful call for their loved one to teach them tonight.

Perfect pitch. Perfect diction. Such distinctive phrasing, with all the feeling and emotion expressed in the lyrics. No wasted notes. Ella, Sarah and Billie are rightfully lauded as the geniuses of vocal Jazz, yet Dinah was just as monumentally talented. A true artist of the highest order.
