The band formed in 2000 when most of the members were still in their teens. They were first signed to indie label Bettie Rocket and released two albums before signing to Tooth & Nail in 2002.
The band broke up in July of 2004, but in a deal with Tooth & Nail, singer/guitarist Seth Roberts' new band Eager Seas, who were signed to the same label, released their first album under the name Watashi Wa before leaving the label. The band made it clear that they were parting ways with the label peacefully, but also that the band would be changing their name after the release in order to separate themselves from the fiasco attached to the names of both Watashi Wa and Eager Seas.

where he, he sailed around the world
and the dream became and she called it love
she dreamed that she'd be rescued
yeah she, she wanted to be saved
but she settled there for what we call the game
it's a game
it's a game we play
in a world
in a world
in a world we heard about today
it's a game
it's a game
it's a game we love
cause we heard it was all so fine today, today
it started in a novel
but then they, they changed it on the screen
and a dream became a dream in vain
and shot by desolution became true and by her pain
and she settled there than trust to like the game
it's a game
it's a game
it's a game we play
in a world
in a world
in a world we heard about today
it's a game
it's a game
it's a game we love
cause we heard it was all so fine today, today
darling if you could wait your love would come
love is so much more than a game
it's a game
it's a game we play
The lyrics to Watashi Wa's song "The Game" may seem at first glance to be about a simple game that people play, but upon closer inspection, it's clear that the song is actually about the illusions and dreams that people have about love and relationships. The song begins with a reference to a movie in which a man sails around the world, and a woman dreams of being rescued. This dream turns into an illusion that she calls love, but in reality, it is just a game that people play. The song then goes on to talk about how this game is played in the world we live in, a world that we hear about but do not really understand.
The second verse of the song makes reference to a novel that has been changed for the screen. Here again, we see the theme of illusions and the dreams that people have, and how they can be shattered by reality. The song then goes on to talk about how people settle for the game instead of trusting in something real.
Overall, "The Game" is a song that speaks to the human experience of longing for love and connection, but often being disappointed by the reality of relationships. It speaks to the illusions and fantasies that we have about love and how they can lead us astray.
