On The Road
Watchmen Lyrics

mark the road like grave markers in the snow
Monks make honey out of young boys' cheeks
and religion is a hockey puck in your beak
There is hot death on a cold, cold road
and life is a wire act in the breeze
The police all wired on radio
and scoundrels the only ones they believe
Panties were prizes and football a disease
Slip out the window of your parent's house tonight
We'll be sweet as molasses if only they will ask us
How old we plan to be when we die
Where greasy fists and burning books
are the only way to heaven they know
We played roulette in a sewer pipe
to hide our broken arms from the cold
Stealing grocery carts to cook our meat
Jumping from windows with casts on our feet
There are coming for us, this I know
Crash that car & chew on that mold
Panties were prizes and football a disease
Slip out the window of your parent's house tonight
We'll be sweet as molasses if only they will ask us
How old we plan to be when we die
There's a tractor committing suicide
And a German wife too fat to die
Better that paint church and shovel that drive
They killed that child with American pride
Park your truck on the railroad tracks
and eat a bottle of sleeping pills
Never use your knees on frigid nights
Or swim in the Mississippi swill
The lyrics of Watchmen's song 'On the Road' are vivid and imaginative, taking the listener on a journey through a world that is bleak, dangerous, and unpredictable. The song seems to be describing a dystopian society where life is harsh and unforgiving, and people have to do whatever it takes to survive. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song, as Fingerhut trucks and granite stones mark the road like grave markers in the snow. This creates an eerie and unsettling atmosphere that is maintained throughout. The line 'Monks make honey out of young boys' cheeks' is disturbing and suggests that the religious figures in this society are not to be trusted.
The images in the next few lines are equally grim and unsettling. 'Hot death on a cold, cold road' suggests that death is always lurking, even in the most mundane of places. The line 'life is a wire act in the breeze' implies that people are constantly on the edge, struggling to maintain their balance in a world that is always shifting and changing. The police are 'wired on radio', which suggests that they are constantly alert and ready to pounce on any unsuspecting individuals. Meanwhile, the scoundrels are the only ones they believe, which highlights a sense of corruption and distrust in the society described in the song.
The themes of survival and the struggle to maintain a sense of self in a hostile world continue throughout the rest of the song. The lines 'panties were prizes and football a disease' suggest that even innocuous things have taken on new and darker meanings in this society. The idea of slipping out of a parent's house in the dead of night and being 'sweet as molasses' suggests a desire for escape and a longing for something more than what life currently offers. Ultimately, Watchmen's 'On the Road' paints a picture of a world that is brutal, unforgiving, and unfathomable.
