King of the Beach features a complete rhythm section comprised of Stephen Pope and Billy Hayes, both formerly of the late Jay Reatard's touring band. They toured for almost a year straight until Hayes left the band for some time off. Jacob Cooper, former drummer of The Mae Shi, has since taken his place. After playing the major festival circuit, Nathan started his own record label Ghost Ramp and released the Life Sux EP on September 20th 2011.
On March 26, 2013 Wavves released their 4th studio album "Afraid of Heights" on Mom + Pop records. Jacob Cooper left the band in 2013. Brian Hill (The Soft Pack/The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower) began playing drums soon after.
Wavves' fifth album entitled "V" was released on October 2, 2015 through Ghost Ramp and Warner Bros. Records.
That’s On Me
Wavves Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In this world, some things you’ll have to just let go
Do you believe me? I don’t believe in anything
Do you believe me? I don’t believe in anything
[Chorus:]
Do what your brain says
Take what you like
It’s not easy as I thought it would be
That’s on me
Split my teeth and tongue
Chew on my gums
To hunt is to carry
Lay my head to rest
Under a grave
The sun is a cherry
The sun is a cherry
What’s yours is mine, we’re married
Uuuhhhhh
[Chorus:]
Stumble down the hall
And split my teeth and tongue against the wall
There’s no right or wrong
Crawl through shade to get beyond the sun
Split my teeth and tongue
Split my teeth and tongue
Split my teeth and tongue
[Chorus x2]
The lyrics to Wavves’ song That’s On Me are somewhat cryptic, yet they paint a vivid picture of a troubled mind. The opening lines “You are soaked in bleach and faint of heart” describe someone who is deeply wounded and struggling to stay afloat. They are seeking reassurance, but the singer can’t offer it: “Do you believe me? I don’t believe in anything.” The repetition of this line emphasizes the singer’s sense of hopelessness and apathy.
The chorus is a warning against making bad decisions. “Do what your brain says / Take what you like / Soon it’s over, you’ll regret your whole life” suggests that the consequences of impulsive behavior can have long-lasting effects. The final line “It’s not easy as I thought it would be / That’s on me” implies that the singer has made this mistake before and is taking responsibility for their actions.
The later verses become more abstract, perhaps representing a descent into madness or a hallucinogenic state. The image of “The sun is a cherry” is surreal and dreamlike. The final repetition of “Split my teeth and tongue” is unsettling and could represent self-harm or an attempt to silence oneself.
