Don't Go Changing
Waylon Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Staring at a blank page and it breaks my heart
So many things I want to say
But I don't wanna use words that tear you apart
I wish I was a better man but I'm just a child
Searching for answers that I can't give you
And don't go wasting our fragile love
If we build it up, we break it down
If we let it fly it'll hit the ground
So don't go changing our broken hearts
'Cause it's broken to make you whole
I find it strange to realize
What's in my head is not what's inside my heart
Too much of everything
Can make you forget about the little things
That can lift you up and make you live
And even though I won't be there
To live the dreams we used to share
All that I am, I gave it to you
So I'll let you go now
I'm breaking the chain
I wished that I could teach you everything I was hoping to
But I guess it's me that's gotta learn from you
So don't go changing our broken hearts
And don't go wasting our fragile love
If we build it up, we break it down
If we let it fly it'll hit the ground
So don't go changing our broken hearts
'Cause it's broken to make you whole
The song "Don't Go Changing" by Waylon is a reflection of a relationship that has been broken. The singer is left with a blank page and a heartbreak, as he struggles to put into words how he feels. He acknowledges that there are things he wants to say, but he is afraid of using words that will hurt his partner. He wishes he was a better man, but he feels like a child who doesn't have answers to the questions his partner has.
The chorus of the song is a plea to his partner not to change their relationship, which is already broken. It's a fragile love, and they have been building it up just to break it down again. They have been letting their love fly, but each time it hits the ground. He tells his partner that the relationship is broken to make her whole, and changing it won't make it better. He acknowledges that they have forgotten about the little things that once made them happy and lifted them up.
Towards the end of the song, the singer is resigning himself to the fact that he has to let his partner go. He wishes to teach her everything he was hoping for, but he realizes that she has something to teach him. The song's overall message is that love is fragile and sometimes broken, but it's still worth holding on to.
