Womack Lee Ann
Some Things I Know
When The Wheels Are Coming Off (with Ricky Skaggs
(Randy Hardison/Leslie Satcher/Wynn Varble)
(Track 10 - Time 3: 40)

We started down this road together
It was paved with hope and dreams of forever
We've been coasting for a while
And you act like nothing's wrong
But even I can tell when the wheels are comin' off

What isn't taken care of falls apart
Now we've got a pair of neglected broken hearts
We may get another mile or two
Before somebody walks
But even I can tell when the wheels are comin' off

You've got to help me fix this
Oh it's time to face the facts
We can't go on like we have been
And it's too late for turnin' back
When it comes down to what makes love work
I'll admit I'm lost
But even I can tell when the wheels are comin' off

You've got to help me fix this
Oh it's time to face the facts
We can't go on like we have been
And it's too late for turnin' back
When it comes down to what makes love work
I'll admit I'm lost
But even I can tell when the wheels are comin' off

When it comes down to what makes love work
I'll admit I'm lost
But even I can tell when the wheels are comin' off

Overall Meaning

The song "When The Wheels Are Coming Off" by Lee Ann Womack is a reflective tune about a relationship that is falling apart but the couple is not acknowledging it. The singer, who seems to be the more aware of the two, realizes that the relationship is at a breaking point and needs some work to continue. She describes the beginning of the relationship as hopeful and full of dreams of lasting forever. However, as time went on, things were not taken care of, leading to neglected and broken hearts. She admits that she is lost when it comes to what makes love work, but even she can tell when the wheels are coming off.

The lyrics portray a sense of urgency and desperation, as the singer implores her partner to help her fix the relationship before it's too late, admitting that they cannot go on like they have been. The tone is sad and melancholic, as the singer is almost resigned to the fact that the relationship may be beyond saving. However, the song also highlights the importance of communication in a relationship and the need to address issues before they become too big to handle.

W.C & the e.c. opened for Stiv Bators and the Lords of the new church in 79. Not many of us had heard of Wayne County. An excellent performance by them.

I saw Wayne perform this at Reading Festival in 1977. When I came back home I scoured my local record emporiums for the single. Bear in mind in most towns back then most outlets were like Woolworths, or family owned stores. So when you asked for the record and had to say what it was called...well, you can imagine the reaction. I eventually bought it at a backstreet independent store.
