It was racing towards us without being seen.

As I watched, there was another jet of gas.
I witnessed another burst of gas emerge from the planet.

It was another missile, starting on its way.
It was another missile getting ready to launch.

And that's how it was for the next ten nights.
For the next 10 nights, it was the same pattern.

A flare, spurting out from Mars.
A bright sudden burst coming from the planet.

Bright green, drawing a green mist behind it;
It created a bright green that left a trail of green mist as it traveled through space.

Although visually stunning, it was also unsettling.

Ogilby, the astronomer, assured me we were in no danger.

Then came the night the first missile approached Earth.

Suddenly the top began moving: rotating, unscrewing;
Suddenly, the cylinder's lid began to move, twisting and turning.

and Ogilby feared there was a man inside trying to escape.
Ogilby worried that there might be someone inside trying to get out.

He rushed to the cylinder but the intense heat stopped him before he could burn himself on the metal.
Ogilby raced towards the cylinder, but the blazing heat was too intense for him to approach safely.
