Waynes World
Wayne and Garth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

At midnight, on the 12th of August,
a huge mass of luminous gas erupted from Mars and sped towards Earth.
Across two hundred million miles of void,
invisibly hurtling towards us,
came the first of the missiles that were to bring so much calamity to Earth.

As I watched, there was another jet of gas.
It was another missile, starting on its way.
And that's how it was for the next ten nights.
A flare, spurting out from Mars. Bright green, drawing a green mist behind it;

a beautiful, but somehow disturbing sight.
Ogilby, the astronomer, assured me we were in no danger.
He was convinced there could be no living thing on that remote,
forbidding planet.

The Astronomer

[Chorus]
The chances of anything coming from Mars
Are a million to one, he said (ahh, ahh)
The chances of anything coming from Mars
Are a million to one, but still, they come...

Then came the night the first missile approached Earth.
It was thought to be an ordinary falling star,
but next day there was a huge crater in the middle of the common,
and Ogilby came to examine what lay there.

A cylinder, thirty yards across, glowing hot,
with faint sounds of movement coming from within.
Suddenly the top began moving: rotating, unscrewing;
and Ogilby feared there was a man inside trying to escape.

He rushed to the cylinder but the intense heat stopped him before
he could burn himself on the metal.

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Wayne's World describe a science-fiction scenario, where the singer describes a series of events that leads to Earth being attacked by Martians. The song begins on the 12th of August, where a huge mass of gas erupted from Mars and headed towards Earth. Following this, missiles from Mars came towards Earth, with a bright green mist behind them. Although the astronomer, Ogilby, assured the singer that there was no danger, the night came when the first missile approached Earth, which left a huge crater in the middle of the common. Ogilby went to examine the object and found a cylinder, 30 yards across, that was glowing hot and emitting faint sounds of movement from within.

As the top of the cylinder began rotating and unscrewing, Ogilby panicked, thinking that there was someone inside trying to escape. He attempted to approach the cylinder, but the heat was too intense, stopping him from getting close enough to burn himself on the metal. The chorus of the song repeats the astronomer's earlier assertion that the chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one, but still, they continue to come. The song's narrative implies that the Martians invade Earth, and this invasion may have been a metaphor for the danger of blindly accepting scientific progress without considering its consequences.

hillbilly5012 An infinitely shittier version of the Wayne's World show

@Adamguy2003

hillbilly5012 A horrible sitcom show that ran on Nickelodeon about two dumb flaky girls who run a stupid webcam series (Which, thinking about it, is often indeed like a much crappier version of the Wayne's World show) that for some reason is supposed to be an Internet hit, and the insipid "adventures" they get up to with their friends behind the scenes. I've had dental work done that's been more pleasant to sit through than what I've seen of that show.
It embodies pretty much everything stupid, lame, and vapid about children's television today.

@hillbilly5012

Adamguy2003 that was an excellent explanation

@quicksilver9345

Adamguy2003 gotta agree, excellent explanation. Damn shame it's compared to Wayne's World however.....cause i fucking love this movie(and their would-be show)
