In April 2009, We Are the In Crowd's Myspace page was hacked. The hacker deleted all of their friends and music. The music site Absolutepunk.net posted a news article regarding the hacking, and the news post attracted the attention of someone at Hopeless Records who contacted the band shortly after. On November 10, 2009, the group announced their signing with Hopeless Records as "The In Crowd" and released their first single "For the Win" on iTunes. The band changed their name to "We Are the In Crowd" due to trademark issues with a reggae band from the seventies who were also called "The In Crowd"
In February 2009, We Are the In Crowd recorded their debut Hopeless Records EP with producers Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount (All Time Low, Mayday Parade, Jimmy Eat World, Cartel). The EP, titled Guaranteed To Disagree, was released on June 8, 2010.
The music video for "Both Sides of the Story" was officially released on October 15, 2010. The music video for "Never Be What You Want" was released on April 20, 2011. The band performed on the Vans Warped Tour for Summer 2010.
The band entered the studio in early May 2011 to begin recording their full length debut. On August 3, 2011 it was announced the album would be titled Best Intentions and that it would be released on October 4. It debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 at No. 122.

But, I will light the way without you (without you)
And this time I realize you could have had my heart.
But I'm not going down without you.
You were putting on a show, putting on a show.
So I'd rather be alone, rather be alone.
Take another step and I'll lose it.
Breaking down your walls, breaking down your walls.
I'm not waiting for your call, waiting for your call.
Say another word and I'll lose it.
Everything you do is so useless.
Before I have to go, before I have to go.
I just wanted you to know, wanted you to know.
You're on your own.
This time I'll let it slide.
Not gonna fall apart.
I'm alright, I'm just waiting until I get you.
I lied when I said that everything was alright.
Don't drag this out for another night.
Well I should have known that you would move on and on and on without me.
Take another step and I'll lose it.
Sick of hearing all your excuses.
Breaking down your walls, breaking down your walls.
I'm not waiting for your call, waiting for your call.
Say another word and I'll lose it.
Everything you do is so useless.
Before I have to go, before I have to go.
I just wanted you to know, wanted you to know.
You're on your own.
How did it blind us to the end?
Never saw right through it.
A dose of your own medicine.
So read my lips.
You're on your own.
You're on your own.
You're on your own.
You're on your own.
You're on your own.
You're on your own.
You're on your own.
The lyrics to We Are the In Crowd's song "On Your Own" tell the story of someone who has been betrayed by a lover and is now struggling to move on. The opening lines suggest that the singer has been left in the dark and abandoned by their partner. However, the singer is resilient and refuses to let their heartache keep them down. They vow to "light the way" without their ex and take control of their own life.
The chorus is a declaration of independence and empowerment. The singer is "breaking down walls" and refusing to wait around for their ex to come back. They are done with their lies and excuses and are ready to move on. The repeated phrase "You're on your own" is a powerful statement of finality and closure.
The bridge of the song is introspective and bitter. The singer reflects on how they never saw the end coming and how their lover gave them a "dose of their own medicine." They end the song with a final reminder that their ex is truly alone now.
