Beliefs
We Came As Romans Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What is this whispered thief?
Is it a lie? Is it a lie?
Does fabrication begin at belief?

Who steals my years to keep all to themselves?
Is it only just the ground we stand open?
Is it only just the ground we stand upon?
Is it only just the ground we stand upon?
I've asked you, yet heard no reply.
Is it only just the ground we stand upon?
Will I just soak into this earth when I die?
Have I fallen before I finished?

Who answers my questions when ears do not listen?
When silence speaks in volumes.
And I have heard no reply, heard no reply.

This doubt that clouds what I perceive as truth,
the unnerving sense that there is nothing left.
An illogical view where purpose is gone.
Who wills theses groundless conceptions?

Find faith in life,
in whatever will keep you breathing.
Find faith in life,
in whatever will keep you believing
Whatever will keep you believing that we
We are not meaningless. We are not meaningless.

Retain what you have learned because love is an endless wonder.
It's a never-ending knowledge,
this is our only solution.

I believe in me
I believe in you

And I believe that we are not meaningless.
(In whatever will keep you believing we are not meaningless.)

Overall Meaning

The song "Beliefs" by We Came As Romans is a powerful expression of doubt and uncertainty, as the lyrics describe the struggle to find meaning and purpose in life. The opening lines ask the question, "what is this whispered thief?" which suggests that there is something stealing away the time and energy of the singer. The next lines ask, "does fabrication begin at belief?" which seems to suggest that perhaps the things we believe in are not actually true, or that they are only illusions created by our own minds.

Throughout the rest of the song, the lyrics continue to explore themes of doubt and uncertainty, asking questions like "who answers my questions when ears do not listen?" and "have I fallen before I finished?" The singer seems to be struggling to find a sense of purpose or meaning in their life, and they are looking to find some kind of answer to their questions.

Despite the uncertainty and doubt expressed in the lyrics, there is a sense of hope and resilience that shines through towards the end of the song. The lines "retail what you have learned because love is an endless wonder" and "I believe in me, I believe in you, and I believe that we are not meaningless" suggest that even in times of doubt and uncertainty, there is still hope to be found in the connections we make with others, and in the love that we share.

Overall, "Beliefs" is a powerful and thought-provoking song that explores themes of doubt, uncertainty, and hope. It encourages listeners to question their beliefs and to seek out the things that give their lives meaning and purpose.

I grew up in a Christian household and while I am no longer religious, I still have respect for it. This song is very relatable for me with my doubts I had with my religion.

I can relate to the lyrics 'Who answers my questions when ears do not listen?
When silence speaks in volumes
And I have heard no reply, - This was me questioning if God is really listening and feeling helpless from no replies

'Find faith in life
In whatever will keep you believing that we are not meaningless' - This is the part that hits me hard and sometimes brings me to tears. When I was younger, I was so lost that at some point I thought the best thing was to off myself.

The lyrics also say 'in whatever will keep you believing..' however if you listen to the screamer the first two times it sounds like he is screaming 'In whatever will keep you breathing' and then the third time he goes in with 'In whatever will keep you believing that we are not meaningless' and I dont know if what I am hearing is the true lyrics but it just adds to the meaning for me.

Its prob just a song and I am maybe looking too deep into it but anyway, I am glad that I am here today. I just wanted to share how meaningful this song is to me.

I wish everyone the best of luck in the lives!
