A Far Cry - We Were Promised Jetpacks
You cried like a child
Who'd just seen their own blood
For the first time
It's a far cry
From all the __ __ __(skin and cells?)
You sang like a bird
Who'd just built their own nest
I've never found my pride
It's tough to digest
It's a far cry
From all the __ __ __(skin and cells?)
It's a tall flag(tough life?)
When you're all __ __ __(skin and cells?)
And I want to wake up
With a gun in my mouth
And i want to wake up
Without any doubt
And I want to wake up
With a gun in my mouth
It's such a far cry
__ __ __ __(From skin and cells?)
And i want to wake
With a gun in my mouth
And i want to wake up
Without any doubt
And I want to wake up
With a gun in my mouth
It's such a tall flag(tough life)
__ __ __ __(When you're only skin and cells?)
Open my heart by side
Can you tell that I'm willing to die
Open my heart by my side
Can you tell that I'm willing to die
Protecting my lungs with my life
Still I open my heart by my side
Protecting my lungs with my life
Still I open my heart by my side
Can you tell that I'm willing to die
Can you tell that I'm willing to die
Can you tell that I'm willing to die
Can you tell that I'm willing to die
Can you tell that I'm willing to die
The song "A Far Cry" by We Were Promised Jetpacks explores themes of vulnerability and despair. The first verse starts with a physical image of someone crying like a child who has just seen their own blood. This is contrasted with the idea that this person's emotional pain is "a far cry" from the physical pain that they have experienced. The second verse shifts to the metaphorical image of someone singing like a bird who has just built their own nest. The singer then admits to not being able to find their own pride, which is tough to digest. The chorus repeats the phrase "It's such a far cry," alluding to the idea that the emotional pain being felt is distant from the physical world of skin and cells.
The next section introduces a startling image of the singer wanting to wake up with a gun in their mouth. This is repeated three times, with the final repetition being slightly altered. The line "It's such a tall flag" suggests that life is tough, and the line "When you're only skin and cells" reinforces the idea that our physical selves are not enough to protect us from the emotional pain we experience.
The final section of the song repeats the lines "Open my heart by side / Can you tell that I'm willing to die / Protecting my lungs with my life / Still I open my heart by my side." This can be interpreted as the singer opening themselves up emotionally, even though it may be dangerous or difficult. The repetition of the line "Can you tell that I'm willing to die" suggests that the singer is willing to take risks and face their emotional pain head-on.

I wish for a fresh start, to overcome my fears and doubts completely. The idea of danger and giving up excites me but also fortifies my will to overcome my limitations. It's tough when the only thing that makes us what we are, are mere skin and cells.

I am willing to be vulnerable and expose myself to danger and harm even when there are things that are dear to me. It takes immense courage to navigate the world, and sometimes we need to be willing to sacrifice everything for what we believe in.

One of my favourite tracks from The Jetpacks and noone ever talks about it. And it never gets played live. Cant even get this on spotify. Its a mystery to me as to why more people dont listen to this. Anyways if anyone reads this please add this song to spotify and I'd also love to hear this live at SWG3 or Liquid Rooms later in the year. Thanks. Xxxx
