Medicine
We Were Promised Jetpacks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where are you going with the long face pulling down
Don't hide away like an ocean
But you can see, but you can smell
And the sound of your waves coming down

I am no superman not at all
But I have no answers for you
I am no hero, and that's for sure
But I do know one thing

Where you go, is where I want to be
Where are you going, where do you go?
Are you looking for answers
For reasons under the stars

If along the way, you are growing weary
You can rest with me until a brighter day
I am no superman, that's for sure
And I have no answers, yeah

I am no hero, oh don't you know
But I do know one thing
Where you are is where I belong
Where you go, I do know, is where I belong

Where are you going, with your beautiful face
Looking down, don't hide away
You are like an ocean that I can't see
But I can smell and the sound

Of your waves coming down
I am no superman, that's for sure
I have no answers for you, I am no hero, oh not at all

I do know one thing, where you are is where I belong
Where you are is where I want to be

Overall Meaning

The song "Medicine" by We Were Promised Jetpacks is a touching tribute to the power of love and companionship in times of uncertainty and doubt. The lyrics express a deep sense of longing and a desire for connection with the person the singer is addressing, while acknowledging the limitations of their own abilities and understanding.

At the beginning of the song, the singer addresses the person with a "long face pulling down" and urges them not to hide away like the ocean. This metaphor hints at the vastness and depth of the person's emotions, which the singer wants to explore and understand. They mention being unable to see or touch these emotions, but they can sense them through the person's scent and the sound of their waves - in other words, their presence.

The singer goes on to confess they are no superhero or hero with all the answers, but promises to be there for the person regardless. They express their desire to accompany the person on their journey, wherever it may lead, and offer comfort and support during times of weariness.

Overall, the song celebrates the beauty and fragility of human relationships, and emphasizes the importance of being present for loved ones in times of need. It also acknowledges the limitations of individual understanding and agency, highlighting the importance of humility and shared experiences to overcome life's struggles.

I think this video is about how overwhelming forces, such as love, can cause us to do crazy, out of the norm, risky things to chase that love, even though this will just cause us pain in the end.
