After their debut LP release, Highways, in 2012 the band started gaining national notoriety and laid the foundations of a loyal fan base. Reinforced by their most accomplished work to date, 2015’s Not A Chance EP, which was released through Panic State Records. The record’s single “Bridge Burner” quickly amassed over 1,000,000 plays on Spotify.
Based in Ottawa and collecting members from the far reaches of Eastern Canada, We Were Sharks continue to wield the full-force of Canadian alternative music. Through a penchant for blending melodic harmony with powerful dissonance they continue to produce infectious music. Even though these boys already have a lot of mileage under their belts, their book is far from written.
Moving Forward
We Were Sharks Lyrics

Seems like everywhere I go, just doesn't feel like home
I've been lost for so long that it's hard to pretend
That I could be comfortable in my own skin
They say you've got no chance in hell
But do they know you better than you know yourself
I keep my eyes on, these dotted lines
And everything has changed, nothing stays the same
I guess I'll keep moving forward
I've been trying to find a way to break this heart of stone
Seems like everywhere I go, I still feel so alone
I've been gone for so long that it's hard to pretend
That I could feel comfortable ever again
They say you've got no chance in hell
But do they know you better than you know yourself
I've been down this road, a thousand times
I keep my eyes on, these dotted lines
And everything has changed, nothing stays the same
I guess I'll keep moving forward
And I don't care what you're trying to say
The truth is I'm not listening
So save it for another day
I've been down this road, a thousand times
I keep my eyes on, these dotted lines
I've been down this road, a thousand times
I keep my eyes on, these dotted lines
And everything has changed, nothing stays the same
I guess I'll just keep moving forward
Just keep moving on
The lyrics to "Moving Forward" by We Were Sharks explore themes of searching for a place to call home and the struggle to find comfort and belonging in one's own skin. The song opens with the singer expressing their longing to find a place they can truly call their own, but everywhere they go feels unfamiliar and lacks that sense of belonging. They have been lost for so long that it's difficult for them to pretend or feel comfortable in their own identity.
The lyrics touch upon the idea that others may doubt the singer's chances of finding their place or feeling at ease with themselves. However, the singer questions whether these doubters truly know them better than they know themselves, implying that they will persevere despite the skepticism.
The chorus repeats the idea that the singer has been down this road countless times, emphasizing their persistence and determination. They keep their focus on the path ahead, represented by the "dotted lines," symbolizing their journey and progress. Despite the changing nature of everything around them, they acknowledge that nothing stays the same, but they will continue moving forward.
The bridge section reflects a defiance towards the opinions of others. The singer states that they don't care what others are trying to say because they are not listening. They brush off negative or discouraging remarks, urging those comments to be saved for another day.
In conclusion, "Moving Forward" is a song that speaks to the desire to find a sense of home and to feel comfortable in one's own identity. It addresses the doubts and skepticism that others may have about the singer's journey, while emphasizing their determination to keep moving forward despite the changing circumstances.
