Luke, I loved what you said about respecting the memories of the house. I moved from a house many years ago. I went back to see what it looked like. My house and the homes of my friends were either gone or being torn down. I pulled over to take in the memories. It was difficult and I wept. The creek where we hunted crawdads, was now but a small ditch. The landscape has changed but those fond memories I will keep for the rest of my life. Thanks for what you do.

@Teresa Corrigan Me Too! I have a picture of me and my sister by a small pine tree. Later when I had two sons, I took thwn to my old house. It is now a small retirement home run by a church. I explained who I was and the let me in so my boys could see where daddy grew up. I took a picture of them by the same tree which is about forty feet tall now.

To me it looks like that house was abandoned while it was being built, or possibly being remodeled. Looking at the unfinished plumbing and the electrical wiring not being terminated. My guess is they ran out of money before finishing. Very cool place, thanks for bringing us with you!! And that hike back out was insane with all of that rain!!

@Pavel Usa All of the trees in every direction are very young. That land has been clear in modern times, likely for timber like a lot of national park land in the east was at one time. It looks like a pretty accessible location, not hard to deliver material.

The house looks like it was never finished. Also, a ballcap works well to keep the rain off your face and keep the hood from blocking your vision. I'm sure you knew that already though.

Yea,I was thinking someone was trying to fix 'er up! Demolished out stuff, rebuild. Run out of money. ABANDONED!! .The basement you can tell someone put some love in there. Probably some bodies down there too. 😂

I thought so too. If it were gutted you’d think there’d still be parts of gyprock (plasterboard) lying around or some areas where it hadn’t yet been removed. Plus that toilet bowl just sitting in the middle of the ‘bathroom’. To me it looks like a place that was never completed. There’s not even bits of old furniture etc

I agree, looks like it was never finished. If it was a demo, seems there would be a lot more damage. There is also a unused roll of roof felt, pretty sure that's not used for demo work.

@Alberto Robertson Nope, doesn't look that place ever had any love for fun in it. Nice block work and I'd think the wood would be worth(lots of W"s) something. It could be from the 80's. Economies go up and down on a regular basis. After 2004, loads of houses were abandoned. Mostly by people who watched to much How to Flip a House on t.v.

You're well seasoned as a hiker. I used to do middle of the night mountain hiking as a teenager. Wild dogs howling in the distance. Big foot following us in the bushes. As I got older I thought maybe it was just a mountain lion. Now that most my hair has fallen from head and the most hiking I do is from the chair to the bathroom, I think it was probably a mouse. Great video, keep them coming.

Great video as always. I actually love seeing the people eat. Steve’s meals encouraged me to cook more and to stop eating out so much. It does not take too much effort to cook a meal and it’s a lot cheaper and healthier. The comment on your coffee was too funny. It’s weird how you can have coffee in the early evenings when camping and not have trouble sleeping. I would have been scared of big spiders or snakes in that house. No way would I have stayed there.

Same. I can't coffee after 1 PM without it messing up my sleep. Oddly enough, I can have a cup of coffee in the morning and go back to sleep, so go figure. :)

I think abandoned structures are a good option for stealth camping. People are already used to it being there, and if you maintain a low profile, you have a ready made shelter and good concealment.

A good reminder is if you think a place is nice and quiet and out of the way, somebody else does, too. You have to look out for others with less than honest intentions.

I hike at a wetland reserve with boardwalks installed to stay above the water line. I thought it would be a unique spot to hide a geocache, then learned from a friend there were several gecaches already hidden out there. My friend uses an app that overlays geocache GPS coordinates on Google maps, and showed me where they were.

The only issue I'd have with sleeping in the basement of that abandoned house overnight (without a mask) is exposure to asbestos dust, especially with high winds blowing the dust around buuut the hell with it, it looked like a ton of fun. Great adventure Luke.

@Mortimer Brewster tbh you can never be too sure we in the Uk banned the last white asbestos in 1999 but as an asbestos lab analyst I’ve found it in materials pre dating it’s ban. A lot of contractors used it anyway.

There were several abandoned houses and a rail car right off a trail near me that I’ve often hiked by. Unfortunately, they were torn down not too long ago and the rail car removed. People probably vandalized them. Wish they were still there, at least I got some pics of them. Always enjoy your content Luke.

Kinda sad when people's dreams for a home were never realized. When you look at what they were trying to do only to be bulldozed in the end. That was a pretty clean demo prep. It looked like a remodel was going on and they found something wrong perhaps. Sold it to the park service to break even or recoup something at least. Abandoning items along with the house sounds like they took a loss and walked away. Just me speculating.

The wood was starting to rot and you can see mold in some places. Honestly, it was a pretty bad idea for Luke to stay overnight in a place like that, for his own long term health. Definitely a law suit waiting to happen if it was intentionally left for people to use.

Reminds me of a song “”This old house once knew its children, this old house once knew its wife . This old house was warm and comfort while they fought the storms of life…” It was popular on the radio durning the 1950’s… It is amazing that the wildlife never moved in and covered everything with bird and rodent droppings, and no sign of vandalism as you pointed out. The woods are beautiful in the storm and I love the thunder. You are a hardy soul!! thank you for taking us along on your adventure.

I love old abandoned homes and buildings and their history, and what a better time to do a stealth on a stormy night the wind would add to the sounds of this old home for sure , every abandoned always has a story to tell i find that interesting. looks like it would have been a nice home to reside in so sad, always enjoy your rainy stormy overnighters the hike out looked nasty with the winds and rain but such a beautiful woodland . thanks for the video

It’s a partially built new home. No one ever lived in it. There’s no Sheetrock throughout the house (as others have mentioned in the thread) and there’s building material all over the place. No heartbreak there…….

Hi Luke, Thanks for the video. I used to always use a poncho as raingear until after a trip to Kodiak Island. The wind was so strong that I could not keep it tied down and the wind ripped out the lashings until the poncho was streaming out 90 degrees from my neck. I went to a ranch and purchased a used full rain suit from a ranch hand. First time I also had a hard time building a fire and had to split dry wood from the center of logs. It was a beautiful time, but truly miserable!

Found this interesting for a change reminds me a little bit of these urbex urban explorers that seek out abandon places sometimes camping out inside them. The combination of what you called it condemned abandon home with structural damage and a hurricane west surprisingly strong winds blowing through sounded counter intuitive to what most people would seek out during a hurricane.

If there's no other light around, red light is still highly visible at night. Not as much as white light, but you will still be seen if someone is observing. Which is why, in the military, you check a map under a poncho, even with red light, because the enemy will see you otherwise.

I've seen countless adventures from people and how they can nonchalantly go to a random spot without the nervousness of running into something (usually other people because they are the worst) while out hiking is beyond me. And if I were to do that I would have to set up some sort of tripwire rigging, which I never see anyone do. Safety is the main factor for me. Like I said, its running into strange people. You never know what kind of weirdos you'd run into.

Your video reminds me of a house I worked on some years ago. I had a heat and a/c business in Gettysburg PA. There was a home on the battlefield that was acquired by the park service which had to be moved. The family had the house picked up and moved down the road several miles and onto a new foundation. They literally cut off the radiator pipes just below the floor so that when the home arrived on its new foundation I was able to install a new boiler and connect to the existing radiator pipes. What is amazing is the home was constructed of brick so the move must have been a real challenge. I didn't witness the move myself. I didn't see the house until after it was sitting firmly on its new basement foundation. I guess the house where you are camping isn't in good enough shape to move.

It was clearly an abandoned renovation, given the stuff in the basement. Brand new windows in frames, etc., just waiting to be installed.

Given the stuff in the basement, I think it's a fair assessment that this house was in the middle of a renovation project when the owners either ran out of money or changed their mind. That's the only way all the new window frames, plywood, etc. makes sense. They clearly had gathered supplies to majorly overhaul the house, but for whatever reason it was never completed.

I really do like this adventure. Love the rain and thunder. Very interesting inside the building. I would have liked to seen the outside of the house. The wood looks new - not weathered or rotted. Some wet - but didn't see rot. Sad to see so much waste, so much money and effort thrown away.

Love the poncho detail. One of my favorite ways to hike. And, yeah, it doesn't keep you dry, but, you know, warm and wet is ok too. I find a "billed" cap keep the hood out of my face. The variability of how a poncho can be warn is amazing.
