It was revered by critics on release as a bold new departure from the prevailing post-punk ethos and served as a major influence on Saint Etienne, the Sundays, Belle And Sebastian and many others. According to Cherry Red, La Varieté is: "A beautifully realised and delicate collection of songs set against a jazz backdrop, it switches across myriad musical settings including samba, cabaret, Afrobeat and highly personal, confessional pop." After splitting up, members Simon Booth and Larry Stabbins formed the more jazz orientated Working Week.

Weekend Lyrics

The edge of raving
Heavy steps and heavy breaths
Out of faze
Out of touch
Hey, I've been causing a battle
So wonderful
Hey, I've been causing a battle
In my heart
I feel so sick, so sick
In my heart
I feel sick, sick, sick
In my heart
I feel sick, sick, sick, sick
In my heart
Hey, I've been causing a battle
Someone just let me go
Hey, I've been causing a battle
My? I've seen so far
I feel sick, sick, sick, sick
In my heart
I feel sick, sick, sick, sick
In your heart
I feel sick, sick, sick, sick
In my heart.
The lyrics to Weekend's song Mirror describe the internal battle that the singer is going through. The first stanza, "I thought I've gone about it wrong, The edge of raving, Heavy steps and heavy breaths, Out of faze, Out of touch," describes the confusion the singer is feeling. The use of the words "raving" and "faze" show that the singer might be struggling with mental health issues such as anxiety or depression.
The following lines, "Hey, I've been causing a battle, So wonderful, Hey, I've been causing a battle," suggest that the singer has been caught up in their own issues and has inadvertently caused problems for others. This realization makes the singer feel sick in their heart. The repetition of "I feel so sick, so sick" emphasizes how overwhelmed the singer is feeling.
The lines, "Someone just let me go, Hey, I've been causing a battle, My? I've seen so far," suggest that the singer is looking for a way out of their internal battle. The lyrics indicate that the singer has been trying to find a solution but has not been successful. The repetition of "In my heart" at the end of the song implies that the singer is looking for a way to heal themselves internally. The song is a powerful representation of the struggles that individuals go through with their mental health.
