Paperface
Weezer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Amy Moore blew her top
stole a car, shot a cop
sped away 2000 miles
didnt stop until she hit New Orleans

but thats alright
theres just one thing
her wedding ring, or anything
she left behind, forgot to pack
how the hell is she gonna get it back?

paperface
paperface
I never heard of paperface
until i moves to the west coast
where i found that to be smooth
i had to wear a paperface

thats alright
theres just one thing
how am I supposed to sing
with this thing in my way
with this thing...
in my face
paperface
paperface

only hope to see
see whats underneath
only hope to be
the me thats underneath

Amy Moore blew her top
stole a car, shot a cop
sped away 2000 miles
didnt stop until she hit New Orleans

but thats alright
theres just one thing
her wedding ring, or anything
she left behind, forgot to pack
how the hell is she gonna get it back?

paperface, paperface, paperface, paperface!

hup, hup, etc (freakout)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Weezer's "Paperface" tell the story of Amy Moore, who goes on an impulsive road trip following an unknown incident that led her to steal a car and shoot a cop. The lyrics imply that Amy is trying to escape from something or someone, and she travels all the way to New Orleans without stopping. However, her journey becomes complicated when she realizes that she left her wedding ring, or perhaps something else important, behind and needs to retrieve it. The chorus of the song introduces the concept of wearing a "paperface" to fit in on the West Coast, likely a metaphor for changing one's identity or hiding one's true self.

The song's lyrics often feel disconnected at first listen, but upon closer scrutiny, they tell a complex story that raises several questions about Amy's backstory and motivations. The song seems to suggest that Amy is running away from something, potentially a toxic relationship or even an abusive partner. Her impulsive behavior and disregard for the consequences indicate a person who is deeply troubled and in pain. However, the song's hopeful concluding lines suggest that Amy may find a way to reclaim her identity and overcome her struggles.

Pidgeon Man

The guy singing backing vocals is Jason Cropper, their original guitarist. He’s like the forgotten member of the band because he was kicked out before Blue Album was even released. Hearing his voice feels surreal at times.

Finn Callahan

@Dusty yeah watching and listening to their earlier stuff it’s like way more screamier or grunge if you wanna call it that. My name is Jonas live in 1992 is a great example

@I Don't Like Birds I had the cropper one cd

SoniKast

@Dusty Yeah, because of Jason and Ric Ocasek I'd say
The Real Demos from 1992 sound much closer to the album than The Kitchen Tapes

Beckmakesvideos

@wickkidda No. they didn’t even know Mikey then. Mykel and carli started the weezer fan club and tragically passed away later in the Park 1990s

fun fact: Amy Moore is a real girl who went to rivers' high school. There was a rumour that she shot a cop then drove to new Orleans where she was arrested. Rivers was so shocked that she would do that since she was such a sweet girl in high school that it inspired him to write this song.
