Take on Me
Weezer Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Though I don't know what I'm to say
I'll say it anyway
Today's another day to find you
Shying away
I'll be coming for your love, OK?
Take on me (take on me)
I'll be gone
In a day or two
So needless to say
I'm odds and ends
But I'll be stumbling away
Slowly learning that life is ok
Say after me
It's no better to be safe than sorry
Take on me (take on me)
Take me on (take on me)
I'll be gone
In a day or two
Oh, things that you say
Is it a life or just to play my worries away
You're all the things I've got to remember
You're shying away
I'll be coming for you anyway
Take on me
Take me on
I'll be gone
In a day
(Take on me)
Take me on (take on me)
I'll be gone (take on me)
(Take on me)
The lyrics to Weezer's "Take on Me" are about a person who is trying to communicate with someone they are interested in, but is struggling to express themselves. The first verse shows the singer acknowledging their nervousness as they approach the person they want to connect with. They emphasize that they will try to speak even if they don't know what to say. This could represent the singer's willingness to take risks or put themselves out there even if it's difficult or uncomfortable.
As the song continues, the singer suggests that they will be coming for the person's love, even if they are initially hesitant or seem to be shying away. The chorus then emphasizes the singer's desire to take on this challenge, to experiment and see what might happen. The repeated line "I'll be gone in a day or two" could represent the temporary or fleeting nature of the moment, as well as the singer's desire to make the most of it.
The second verse touches on the theme of uncertainty as the singer refers to themselves as "odds and ends" who are "slowly learning that life is OK." This could represent the singer's tentative approach to life or the process of self-discovery as they try to figure out what they want and who they are. The singer then encourages the other person to take risks as well, reminding them that it's "no better to be safe than sorry."
Overall, "Take on Me" is a song about the joys and challenges of reaching out to someone you like, and the importance of taking risks and being willing to make mistakes in pursuit of connection.

According to Wikipedia, Harket (A-ha singer) ran the chorus from A2 to E5. I believe Harket was simply showing off his vocal range.
If you listen to both versions, Cuomo clearly doesn't run up as high as Harket. I don't see any reason Cuomo should have strived to match Harket's performance. A remake is about the band's impressions and enjoyment of the original, not an attempt to perfectly recreate it. Also, who cares who can sing the highest?
All that said, Cuomo certainly has a wonderful voice and great range. Everyone has their own vocal range and there are certainly female singers with lower vocal ranges. I think most accomplished female singers can reach Cuomo's impressive, yet modest vocal height in this remake and it would make more sense to challenge Harket's original performance with female singers since I believe he was trying to hit his peak.
Even so, most females are sopranos which can easily hit the E5 from the original Harket recording and even the rare alto female can likely hit E5. So it's really not a challenge for most trained female singers to hit the much higher Harket notes.
I apologize for any offense, won't argue with you.

I love covers like this who aren't much different from original. This version still captured that vibe of 80s and I love it :)

Nice little acoustic guitar moment in there helps add a little distinguishability from the original though.
