Vers la fin des années 90, nous découvrions un chanteur atypique, mis en avant dans les émissions musicales du samedi après-midi qui faisaient fureur sur la chaine nationale et en même temps sur des chaînes musicales du câble comme Mcm, un chanteur que la rumeur présentait comme Sud-africain dreadlocks en bataille, style vestimentaire afro, faisant de la pop rock dance et world music. "Awa awa" était le titre phare de cet Ovni, cette trouvaille musicale qui a bousculé l'ordre établi. Puis a suivi "Alane tube de l'été en France, aux mille et une récompenses et qui fit fureur dans plusieurs pays d'Europe et d'Asie.
On était emporté alors par la vague Wes Madiko. Et plus tard, nous apprenions un peu plus sur lui, non sans fierté : Camerounais pur jus de Penja, prince de Moataba dans le Moungo, Wes était effectivement un des nôtres, ce rare talent dont seul le Cameroun, pays de Manu Dibango et sa mosaïque de cultures et de génies sait produire. L'ancien du groupe Deep Forest (sweet lullaby) nous a bluffés par sa maîtrise vocale et sa capacité d'adaptation rythmique.
Un peu tombé dans l'oubli après son succès fulgurant du début des années 2000, le parcours de Wes n'en est pas moins fascinant.
Il laisse à la postérité des pépites telles que "Welenga", "Kekana", "Alane", bien sûr, "Awa awa". Sans oublier plusieurs chansons et de grosses tournées avec Deep Forest groupe dont il était issu et qui vient de lui rendre hommage. Surtout, on retiendra cette voix et ce style inimitables qui ont transcendé les âges et les frontières.
