Body and Soul
Wes Montgomery Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My heart is sad and lonely
For you I sigh, for you dear only
Why haven't you seen it
I'm all for you body and soul

I spend my days in longing
And wondering why it's me you're wronging
I tell you I mean it
I'm all for you body and soul

I can't believe it
It's hard to conceive it
That you'd turn away romance
Are you pretending
It looks like the ending
Unless I could have just one more chance to prove, dear

My life a wreck you're making
You know I'm yours for just the taking
I'd gladly surrender myself to you body and soul

My life a wreck you're making

You know I'm yours for the very taking
I'd gladly surrender myself to you body and soul

Overall Meaning

Wes Montgomery's rendition of the classic tune "Body and Soul" is a sorrowful and longing interpretation of a love that simply cannot be fulfilled. The lyrics express the heartache and yearning of a person who is hopelessly in love with someone who does not return the same feelings. The verses are full of melancholy, and the singer's heart is heavy as they pour their emotions into the song. The first verse emphasizes the singer's intense love for the object of their affection, with a reference to how they sigh for them and are all consumed by their presence. The second verse is much sadder, with the singer expressing confusion over why this person does not love them back - they have been wronged by them, and yet they still long for their love. The third verse is a plea for another chance to prove their love, and the final verse is a surrender to the idea that their life has been destroyed by this unrequited love.

The lyrics of "Body and Soul" are deeply emotional and speak to the pain of love that goes unreturned. The song is a melancholy masterpiece that reflects the tragedy of love. In his rendition, Montgomery's guitar playing complements the mournful lyrics with a soft, sensual sound that captures the longing and heartache of the singer. The imagery of the song is vivid and powerful, and the lyrics portray the physical and emotional devastation wrought by this doomed love affair. Overall, "Body and Soul" is a beautiful and moving composition that will resonate with anyone who has experienced the pain of unrequited love.

@Bryan Leigh Fender VI was released the year the album came out but it must have been recorded slightly earlier than that.
I think Gibson EB-6 would be a more likely choice or a Danelectro which is released earlier.
