Wes never sounded bad. You can go back to the 50s live bootlegs, to the Lionel Hampton recordings from the 40s: doesn’t matter. Wes never sounded bad. And when you really think about that fact, when you consider the aesthetic demands improvisation puts on a musician, and you think about how many hours Wes put on the instrument, the fact that he never sounded bad isn’t merely remarkable. It’s frightening.

They say "Goin'out of My Head" brought Wes Montgomery to public attention worldwide. He then began recording more for the pop market, and came under criticism for abandoning his jazz audiences. What is not commonly known is that he continued playing straight ahead jazz in live performances. I happened to hear him and his brothers, Buddy and Monk, at the Bohemian Caverns in Washington, DC, in June 1966 . . . out of this world . . .

Pleased to see so many viewers appreciate tenor sax man Johnny Griffin together here with
the amazing Wes Montgomery. The tenor solo here is constructed brilliantly, no words can describe
