If You Could See Me Now
Wes Montgomery Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you could see me now, you'd know how blue I've been
One look is all you'd need to see the mood I'm in.
Perhaps then you'd realize I'm still in love with you.
If you could see me now, you'd find me being brave
And trying awfully hard to make my tears behave
But that's quite impossible, I'm still in love with you.

You'll happen my way on some mem'rable day
And the month will be May for a while.
I'll try to smile but can I play the part
Without my heart behind the smile?

The way I feel for you I never could disguise

The look of love is written plainly in my eyes.
I think you'd be mine again if you could see me now.

Overall Meaning

Wes Montgomery's song "If You Could See Me Now" is a poignant ballad that speaks about the pain of unrequited love. The song's lyrics suggest that the singer is still in love with someone who has moved on, and he's struggling to cope with his feelings of loss and loneliness. The opening line of the song, "If you could see me now, you'd know how blue I've been," sets the tone for the rest of the piece. The pain in his soul is palpable as he speaks about his heart's yearning for his lost love.

The verse builds up to the chorus where he talks about how difficult it is to put up a brave face and hide the tears. The use of the simple word "But" speaks volumes about the internal struggle he faces in dealing with his emotions. The haunting melody of the song adds to the melancholy tone that is reflected throughout the piece. The verse following the chorus suggests that he's still waiting for his lost love to return even though his heart is broken. The final verse ends with the hope of her return, "I think you'd be mine again if you could see me now."

Wes Montgomery's rendition of the song is remarkable for its simplicity and elegance. His playing is soulful and reflective, and his phrasing is understated yet powerful. His use of chord progressions that are both sophisticated and emotional adds to the song's overall effect. The song's popularity has only increased over the years, and it remains a jazz classic to this day.

What a great tune this is, performed just beautifully by two artists of jazz perfection!....Wes's solo is just incredible,...oh those lines he plays, and octaves!...and Wynton Kelly's on keys,..just great!...Anybody notice Wynton's ending are shades of Erroll Garner, "Concert by the Sea"....Beautiful!

Absolutely love this tune and version. Beautiful beyond words.

I'm a sax player and I listen to this solo of Wes to get ideas and inspiration. One of the best solo from one of the best ballads bravo to Wes and Tadd Dameron song writer. Nobody could out swing Wes! However, check out Sonny Stitt's version of this classic.

#ClassicMonday #Jazz

Probably my favorite guitar solo. It's so interesting that Wes never takes the solo to some face-melting intensity (though the double-stop section gets pretty close). He is the master of keeping it controlled, keeping it interesting and, most importantly, keeping it cool.

Couldn't agree more, Dave. His melodic development on "No Blues" is so natural and profound. Not only that, it sounds good!
