Might be the best solo I've ever heard Montgomery play. Sure, it's his usual fragmentary style, but it's coherent, less rushed and less monotonous. He not only projects, but he actually creates a distinct atmosphere. I love the interplay of single string lines and octave lines. Great intricate timing too.

@ exappler relppaxe I name Django Reinhardt and Barney Kessel as two of my favorite jazz guitarists. The former left us sad and lyrical music, and the latter left us a lot of urban and light music.

@monomotapa15 Montgomery is definitely in the top 10, maybe the top 5. I think Kessel and Burrell have him beat, just to name two off the top of my head. On the other hand, if I heard more sides like this one, I might change my mind and agree with the critic.

I've seen a jazz critic in Japan write in a jazz magazine as follows: “When asked to list three of the best guitarists in jazz history, I immediately answer the name of Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt, and, after thinking for a minute I would answer the name of Wes Montgomery as the third greatest guitarist. "... Wes Montgomery himself is also a Christian admirer, so I think this jazz critic's word is the biggest compliment.

Apparently all in a day's work, provided your name was Wes Montgomery.

Ask Peter Bernstein,Joe Pass and Pat Metheny who their favorite Jazz guitarist is. I find some comments comical below.
