When a Man Loves a Woman
Wes Montgomery Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Everybody falls in love somehow
Something in your kiss just told me
My sometime is now
Everybody finds somebody someplace
There's no telling where love may appear
Something in my heart keeps saying
If I had it in my power
I'd arrange for every girl to have your charm
Then every minute, every hour
Every boy would find what I've found in your arms
Everybody loves somebody sometime
And although my dream was overdue
Your love made it well worth waiting
For someone like you
Everybody loves somebody sometime
And although my dream was overdue
Your love made it well worth waiting
For someone like you
Wes Montgomery's "When A Man Loves A Woman" is a beautiful song that talks about the beauty and power of love. The lyrics of the song are simple but capture the essence of love: "Everybody loves somebody sometime, everybody falls in love somehow," and "Something in your kiss just told me, my sometime is now." These lines suggest that love is something that can happen to anyone, anywhere, and at any time.
The song goes on to say that "everybody finds somebody someplace," and that "there's no telling where love may appear." The singer has found his special someone, and he feels that something in his heart is telling him that this is where he's meant to be. He talks about how he wishes he could give every girl the charm of his special someone, so that every boy could experience the same joy and happiness he feels.
The refrain of "everybody loves somebody sometime" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing that love is a universal experience. The singer confesses that his dream of finding someone was overdue, but the wait was worth it because he found someone who made it all worth it. With these lyrics, Wes Montgomery speaks to the heart of anyone who has ever fallen in love, suggesting that love is worth the wait and that when it arrives, it brings boundless joy and happiness.

Herbie Hancock's piano contribution is absolutely perfect in this awesome arrangement. I loved this arrangement even as a kid as my oldest brother used to play this LP over, and over again around the house. Hearing it again now brings back some of the warmest feelings in me. Can't help but smile as I melt whenever I hear it even after all these years. The feeling in GREAT MUSIC is eternal!

I was introduced to the great Wes Montgomery in the army in 1967, by a good friend from East St. Louis named John Shanklin. Those were the days when we had unity.

My girl (Kathy) and I saw Wes Montgomery in concert exactly 2 weeks before he died of a heart attack. This was in June of 1968 @ Melodyland (in the round) in Anaheim, California. I was just 21 (Kathy was 20) but we were huge fans of his and enjoyed that night, with Wes, so very much. Couldn't believe he died just 2 weeks later ~ I guess we saw one of his very last concerts. It's all just a distant memory but Wes, and Kathy, made that night during the summer of '68 very special.
