Formed in 1999 by Fruity McMetcalf and Kolby Waters, their early years were uneventful and guided by a lead singer who's ego outweighed his ability to work with a band. There was also this guy, Mike, the original drummer for about 6 months, who whined and complained alot, and eventually quit. With two guitar players, no drummer and no bass player, one magical evening, Kolby met Danny American, a short, attractive young ginger who's musical talents only began with the six string. As luck had, Danny just happened to be good friends with a super-band-geek drummer, Micah Elliot, and the four got together one cold evening in a Mexican's barn, where they tested out some of the songs Kolby and Fruity McMetcalf had been writing. The virgin practice was a tremendous success. Micah's passion and intensity on the drums mimicked the ferocity and thunderous pounding of a runaway stampede. Kolby's screaming rock n' roll riffs roared acrossed his frets like a roller coaster unhinged from its tracks. And Danny, the very soul of the West End Crooks brand of punk rock, funktafied every slap, and injected the flavor directly into the heart of the music. As for Fruity, well, he eventually decided that the trio didn't fit his "brand" of punk rock, and one evening, after mentioning that the black beanie with a grey stripe across it that Micah was wearing wasn't "punk" enough for his tastes, Fruity McMetcalf shattered the band bong and spraypainted "Fruity owns your ass" across a map of Arizona they had hanging up in their band room. Getting a kick out of the unfolding comedy, Kolby, Danny and Micah spraypainted an "e" over the "n", paving the way for irony, because Fruity had still not put in his $150 for their first album's recording, Running Late, release independently in 2001.

With the self-exiling of Fruity McMetcalf, the West End Crooks were finally born. For a brief period from 2001 to 2005, the West End Crooks played local punk venues around the Metro Phoenix area weekly, only really venturing out to Tucson and Flagstaff on a couple different occasions. Even though they generally stayed within their hometown borders, the West End Crooks opened up for bands like The Hudson Falcons, Ozomatli, The Casualties, Fishbone, U.S. Bombs, U.K. Subs, Pistol Grip, The Vibrators, Pepper, North Side Kings, and Toys That Kill. In 2003, with the help of their talented friend on the harmonica, Sturgis Waters (no relation to Kolby), they recorded their second album, Time Has Come, which was never pressed and officially released. They were included on several AZPunk.com compilation albums, and played on the Warped Tour side stages in 2000 and again in the AZPunk.com local village in 2004.

With Danny deciding to move to California, and Kolby eventually impregnating a second female, the West End Crooks called it quits in late 2005, but they live on in the power of the innernets and Last.fm.

I'm surprised about Casper's death. I followed his case and watched a couple of documentaries about him and I had not heard about his passing.
His involvement in the drug business was what led to his downfall, in a figure of speech.
