Miles From Monterey
West Indian Girl Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

16 hours away...a bit too far from Monterey
Never mind the coastline
Need a dime to pay the phone
I can hear her say
All the lights are raining down.

I'm falling away, I'm falling in love
Come on, come on, come on, let it go

On a highway...rows & rows of tired lives
Miles from Monterey
Passing cars with broken hearts
I still hear her say

I'm falling away, I'm falling in love
Come on, come on, come on, let it go

The sunlight falls from orange to red
On the road to stars that chain together
We could never see what never is

I'm falling away, I'm falling in love
Come on, come on, come on, let it go

Overall Meaning

The song "Miles From Monterey" by West Indian Girl describes the feeling of being far away from someone that you love. The first verse sets the scene for distance, with the singer being 16 hours away from Monterey, a place where they may have memories with their loved one. Despite the physical distance, the singer can still hear their loved one's voice and the "lights raining down," which could symbolize a city or an emotional storm.

The second verse brings us to a highway with tired lives passing by, possibly representing the monotony of life without their loved one. The line "passing cars with broken hearts" highlights how even strangers on the road may have experienced heartbreak. However, the singer still hears their loved one's voice amidst the chaos of the road.

The chorus of the song repeats the lines "I'm falling away, I'm falling in love" multiple times, perhaps representing the internal conflict of being away from someone that they love but still feeling their love growing stronger. The lines "let it go" could mean letting go of the physical distance and allowing themselves to fully fall in love.

Overall, the lyrics of "Miles From Monterey" convey a sense of longing and distance, while also touching on themes of love and heartbreak.

So strange… Circa 2007 I'm relatively new to iTunes and I'm just in one of those moods where I just feel like randomly searching the Apple ITunes music library... I think I might've put in the word "Indian girl," as I had been getting into watching Bollywood movies (and being quite attracted to Indian women) and up came "West Indian Girl." So I previewed a couple songs… and BAM, I was HOOKED!

Then I searched the Internet to see where they were touring and lo and behold I think within 2 weeks of discovering them they were coming to the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip - Like down the street from where I lived (by Fairfax & Sunset)!!

It was amazing going from a strange random search, probably discovering them like no one else, to seeing them play, "What are you Afraid of" LIVE. Absolutely one of my favorite concert experiences , this lifetime.

If I had any messages for them I would say:
1) Please continue your great works (I actually would like to hear a chapter 2 for the song, "What are you Afraid of") and
2) Please tour again and come to Dallas Texas (Where I currently live) – we have a wonderful HOB here :-)

I miss this... Why do all good bands have to break up. One of the few bands that were actually good from this decade and now they're gone =/
