"Somewhere" is a song from the 1957 musical West Side Story, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. This song is sung by the two protagonists, Tony and Maria, who dream of a place where they can be together even though their families are enemies. The song begins with Tony expressing his hope for a place where they can be themselves and live life on their terms. He sings that there must be "a place for us," where they can find peace and quiet and open air, and wait for their time to come. Maria responds that she too has hope for their future and yearns for a time when they can spend their days together, enjoying each other's company and finding joy in the little things in life, like having time to look around and care for each other. The two sing together, expressing their faith that they will find this place someday and that it will be worth all the struggles they face.

While I hugely appreciated listening to Rita Moreno's singing voice again in the remake, I totally missed the sadness and drama felt when hearing Tony and Maria singing this song. It's incredibly sad. You can feel hope, but at the same time you know everything's lost. This scene breaks me every time.

1000% agree. Mentioned to my wife as the scene began that I couldnāt believe theyād taken the moment away from Ansel and Rachel. But bigger picture, l watched and I listened but was thinking of the original version thru the whole movie. Nothing from Spielbergās take has stuck w me at all.

@@robertshroder2672 Totally agreed. I really like Ansel and Rachel's singing in the new movie and taking away this song was a huge misstep. I thought maybe they might have recorded it just for the album, but no such luck. Would have really liked to hear it.
