You Raise Me Up
Westlife Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I am down and oh my soul so weary
When troubles come and my heart burdened be
Then I am still and wait here in the silence
Until you come and sit a while with me

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up, to more than I can be

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up, to more than I can be

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains (stand on mountains)
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas (stormy seas)
I am strong (I am strong), when I am on your shoulders (I am strong)
You raise me up, to more than I can be

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains (stand on mountains)
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas (stormy seas)
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up, to more than I can be

You raise me up, to more than I can be
Thank you

You raise me up (thank you)
(Thank you Belfast) stand on mountains)
(It's been an emotion night for everybody)
(Thank you to BBC radio 2 to Zoe Ball) stormy seas
(To everybody for listening and we'll see you very, very soon)
(Good night) I am strong, ooh
To more than I can be
You raise me up, stand on mountains
Stormy seas
I am strong, ooh
To more than I can be, ooh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Westlife's song You Raise Me Up convey a message of hope and strength during difficult times. The opening lines depict the singer's weariness and heartache when faced with troubles, but the mood changes as they find solace in the presence of a loved one. The four-word phrase, "you raise me up", repeats throughout the song and serves as the central message. The singer attests that they can stand tall on mountains and walk through stormy seas because they draw their strength from the support and encouragement of the person they sing to.

The song paints a beautiful picture of finding comfort and encouragement in loved ones when facing hardships. The line "when I am on your shoulders" conveys the image of being carried by another person and refers to them lifting you up. This phrase also echoes the idea that loved ones can help elevate you to greater heights and achieve more than you thought was possible. β€˜You Raise Me Up’ speaks to feelings of resilience, strength, and the importance of support systems in our lives.

I lost my dad to the Covid 19 four days ago. Despite I'm in my mid 30s I was still daddy's girl, I can't imagine life without him. I kept hold of my phone the whole day yesterday hoping that my dad would call me to wish me happy Easter but he never did. It hurts a lot he died alone in the hospital without having me beside him. I love you daddy you will always remain alive in my heart.
