Her solo work is raga-inspired, psychedelic music, using guitar strings as basic sound material and sound effects as an instrument. Home-made one string bass stick used to produce low bell-like sounds out of an horror movie. Most tracks have vocals, usually strangely deformed through effect pedals. Track editing and cueing is kept to a minimum in the DIY, abrupt tradition, giving freshness to the music.
Weyes Blood has existed since at least 2006, starting as a conventional folk singer in an unamplified universe, then transforming into a more a crouched/hieroglyphic electronic chasm style, culminating in a European tour with Axolotl. After two seasons of hibernation and a relocation to Baltimore, she materialized her evolution and began writing/playing the darkly haunted narcotic drifter ballads that make up "The Outside Room", her first official full-length. The entire album was recorded, mixed and produced by Mering herself, then mastered by good friend Graham Lambkin. The record has shadows of "The Shadow Ring" in the oddly creaking ambient sounds and stark, nuanced production, which lend the eerily beautiful folk laments à la Nico. There’s still echoes of her old drone / tape-ghost-clouds moods on tracks like "In the Isle of Agnitio" and the long, bells-laden outro to "Romneydale", but the bulk of the LP is swooning and sweeping, with Natalie’s gorgeous, quasi-Teutonic vox leading the way.
Summer
Weyes Blood Lyrics

For the time to be alone
And think about what I've done
Entire summer's gone
And its time to put
My jacket on
And say goodbye
Trying to cure
Cureless things
Weighing the moth
And drinking the storm
I will be forever yours
At least until this fall
Entire summer's gone
And its time to let
Bygones be bygones
My dear
There's nothing to fear
Each time I lose step
Further and further
From who I am
I won't forget what you showed me
You showed me
How to just be
Summer's gone
The opening lines of "Summer" by Weyes Blood convey a sense of reservation; the singer is seeking a moment of solitude to reflect on past actions. The notion of being alone and introspective is reinforced by the shifting season and the need to wear a jacket. This signals the end of summer and the beginning of fall, a time associated with colder weather, less daylight, and melancholy.
As the song progresses, the singer begins to address a lover or friend. They express a desire to hold on to this person, even as the seasons change and time passes. The phrase "trying to cure cureless things" suggests a certain futility, implying that some things cannot be fixed or healed. The metaphor of weighing a moth and drinking a storm likewise conjures images of struggle and hardship.
However, the final lines suggest a sense of hope and a willingness to move forward. The singer acknowledges that they are drifting away from themselves, but they will not forget what this person has taught them: how to "just be." This may refer to a newfound sense of inner peace or self-acceptance, which contrasts with the earlier feelings of regret and loss.
Overall, "Summer" is a pensive and introspective meditation on time, love, and self-identity. The changing seasons serve as a poignant backdrop to this emotional journey.
