Like A Baby
Wham! Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Foreign skies
They've blinded me to empty charms
I crossed the ocean
And fell into your arms

So sure, so wrong
You sang me a simple tune
I took if for a song

Say goodbye, don't tell me why you have to go
Loving you was as good as gold
As good as gold

I'd love to love you, really love you
But you see, there's something you should know
I really didn't think thought you'd go

Because today
I could have sworn I heard you say
"I love you, I want you"
"I need to be with you today"
I saw something in your face

Stay here beside me
I need your love to hide me
You lied
And now you've gone away

And left me crying like a baby

Overall Meaning

The song "Like A Baby" by Wham! explores the theme of heartbreak and falling for someone who doesn't reciprocate your feelings. The opening lines "Foreign skies, they've blinded me to empty charms" suggest that the singer has been searching for love in different places outside of his comfort zone. He crossed the ocean and fell into the arms of someone who eventually broke his heart. The lines "So sure, so wrong, you sang me a simple tune, I took it for a song" imply that he was confident and felt that the relationship was going well, but it turned out that he misread the other person's intentions.

The chorus captures the emotions of the singer- he is upset and doesn't understand why the other person had to go. He loved the other person and thought that the love was mutual- "Loving you was as good as gold." The lines "I'd love to love you, really love you, but you see, there's something you should know, I really didn't think you'd go" suggests that he wasn't prepared for the other person to leave him. The bridge of the song is where the singer remembers a moment where the other person expressed their love and vulnerability- "I could have sworn I heard you say, "I love you, I want you", "I need to be with you today", I saw something in your face." He implores the other person to stay with him, but it's too late- "Stay here beside me, I need your love to hide me, you lied and now you've gone away, and left me crying like a baby."

Overall, "Like A Baby" is a poignant and relatable song that explores themes of love and heartbreak. It taps into the universal feeling of being blindsided by someone's departure, even when we had no reason to suspect that it was coming. It also shows the power of music and how sometimes, even the simplest tune can resonate with us deeply.

I figuring it out his music from his begining. I first listened to the Faith album and i loved it. You could listened to Prince, him and George Michael have like a similar style of music but both are really music geniuses in their own way.
