For the bands second album, Hand Over Your Loved Ones, Shannon Harris (from Relish) joined on keyboards. Due to disagreements with the record label, mostly caused by Brendan Brown's wish to self-produce the album, the album received little promotion and did not sell well.
Michael Bellar (keyboards) then joined the band and they re-released their second album (containing two new songs) on their own record label, Montauk Mantis, this time named Suck Fony. In 2005 they released their third studio album, TooSoonMonsoon, once again on their own label.
In 2005, both Mike McCabe (bass) and Michael Bellar (keyboards) left and were replaced by Nicolas diPierro and Gerard Hoffman. Then the following year, diPierro and Pete Brown left and were replaced by Matt Milligan (bass) and Kevin Garcia (drums).
Current lineup:
Brendan Brown (vocals)
Matt Milligan (bass)
Gerald Hoffman (keyboards)
Kevin Garcia (drums)
Johanna Cranitch (backing vocals)
Georgia Haege (backing vocals)

Wheatus Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Creepin' around with yer hot pants on
And them patent leather shoes
Please forgive me baby
But I've been up here too long
Now everybody sing along so that Wheatus can hear ya
Hey now baby your actin' kinda crazy
Hey now sugar your actin' like a hooker
Gotta do what you gotta do
To get yer freak on shoowap
To get yer freak on shoowap
To get yer freak on shoowap
To get yer freak on shoowap
So I heard you've been askin' for a ride
You said take me home in your brothers jeep
To a place where we can hide
Please forgive me baby
But I've been up here too long
Now everybody sing along so that Wheatus can hear ya
Hey now baby your actin' kinda crazy
What has come over you?
Hey now sugar your actin' like a hooker
Gotta do what you gotta do
To get yer freak on shoowap
To get yer freak on shoowap
To get yer freak on shoowap
To get yer freak on shoowap
Don't matter who yer freakin' with you gotta freak with Wheatus first
Hey now baby your actin' kinda crazy
What has come over you?
Hey now sugar your actin' like a hooker
Gotta do what you gotta do
To get yer freak on shoowap
To get yer freak on shoowap
To get yer freak on shoowap
To get yer freak on shoowap
The lyrics of Wheatus's song 'Freak On' talk about a person who observes someone else who is wearing 'hot pants' and 'patent leather shoes' and creeping around. The singer of the song acknowledges that even though the other person thinks they are being discreet, he sees them. The song's chorus repeats the phrase 'Get yer freak on shoowap' several times. The song's lyrics then shift to the singer who describes how the other person asks for a ride to a secret place that they can hide. The singer feels they've been up there too long and tries to ignore them; however, the chorus repeats once again.
The song could be read in two ways, one as a guy calling out a girl for being inappropriate and two: as a guy trying to woo a girl. The chorus makes you want to dance, but the lyrics leave a haunting impression on listeners. In the end, the singer confirms that it doesn't matter with whom someone freaks, one has to freak with Wheatus first.
