Wheatus Lyrics

It's only been an hour but I think I feel the power,
Tell me where do you guys want to go to?
Well I could go for that but I need to buy a hat,
I think I saw some for sale on the small streets,

Can I play the game without a plan?
I think Pete has the map but tell me what's the difference?
I do not know exactly where I am,

I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in

Silver Mushroom Jesus, he is standing in between us,
Preaching words that he doesn't believe,
I think that he's cracking 'cause he keeps calling me Captain,
And he's barking and growling at strangers,
Later on tonight he's gonna turn back into Elvis,
When they kick his ass out of the sex show,

We play in a band that has no fans,
I think Pete lost the map we don't know where were going,
I'm trying to remember who I am,

I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)

Mike prefers a quiet conversation in the pub,
But the English are pissed, drunk and raging,
"Hey Bono" they said when they threw peanuts at my head,
And said "Hey prick can we try on your glasses?"
Now I am just a dork, but listen I come from New York,
So I said "Hey, what are you guys, Irish?"

We came to play the game without a plan,
Pete puked on the map we don't know where were going,
I do not exactly who I am,

I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)

I'm an American in Amsterdam,(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)
I'm an American in Amsterdam.(Amsterdam, Amsterdam,)

Overall Meaning

The song "America in Amsterdam" by Wheatus talks about the experience of being an American tourist in Amsterdam. The lyrics reflect the confusion, disorientation, and absurdity that comes with traveling to a foreign country. The song opens with the singer feeling empowered but quickly admits that he doesn't know where he is or where he's going. He mentions buying a hat and trying to follow a map, but even that is proving difficult. The chorus repeats the titular phrase "I'm an American in Amsterdam," which emphasizes the feeling of being out of place.

The second verse introduces the character of "Silver Mushroom Jesus," who appears to be a street preacher but is perhaps not entirely lucid. He calls the singer "captain" and acts in strange ways, which adds to the overall sense of confusion the song conveys. The bridge of the song describes an encounter in a pub where the singer's glasses are requested by some drunken Englishmen. He responds with a sarcastic remark but ultimately still feels like a "dork."

The song is a humorous take on the experience of being a tourist and the frustration that comes with not knowing where you are or what you're doing. It also touches on the stereotypes and cultural misunderstandings that can occur when traveling to new places. Overall, "America in Amsterdam" is a catchy and energetic song that captures the spirit of adventure and uncertainty in travel.

Have to admire the swipe at the English bulldogs in this song.

27/01/96 Grasshopper hash bar on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal: a guy collapsed across the table beside us, smashing coffee cups and saucers, before he hit the floor like a dead man. At least, I thought he was dead. The young American girls at that table went “Oh my Gawd!” “Is he, like, OK?”

“I hope so,” replied the cute one working behind the bar. As I helped her pick him up, an American girl asked one of my friends a question. “Is your friend a doctor?”

“No, but it’s OK, he’s got a Master’s in Sociology.”
