Gone But Not Forgotten

Everything that you've been missing
It's just beyond this door
And if you can see through
All the lights and grand illusion
You'll find out what it's for
And I say don't tell me that you're sorry
Is that all that you can
Is that all that you can say?
Don't realize way too late the feeling
Now it's gone but not forgotten.
And I've always been a stranger,
A wanderer searching in the dark
And you've always been a victim,
A modern martyr playing our your part
I see it written on your face
Between the lines of last year's anger.
Don't realize way too late the feeling
Now it's gone but not forgotten.
I know someday you'll
You'll find out someday.
Don't realize way too late the feeling
Now it's gone but not forgotten.
The lyrics of Whippersnapper's "Gone But Not Forgotten" are about looking back on a relationship or friendship that has ended and feeling with regret that things could have gone differently. The singer seems to be addressing the other person, who they feel has a tendency to live in an illusion and not see the reality of their situation. The lyrics suggest that the other person may have missed out on opportunities or experiences because of this. The singer is disappointed that the other person didn't try harder to salvage the relationship and is tired of hearing apologies that seem empty.
The second verse contains some reflection from both of the people involved. The singer recognizes themselves as a wanderer searching in the dark, while the other person is labeled a modern martyr, someone who is willingly suffering for a cause. The first person seems to see a pattern in the other's behavior that involves being reactive to past anger and not living in the present moment. The chorus repeats the idea that it's too late for a reconnection and that the feeling is gone now but not forgotten.
Overall, the lyrics of "Gone But Not Forgotten" are introspective and regretful, but they also seem to contain a sense of acceptance that some things can't be changed.
