I came across this theme tune this evening and could even remember the helicopter's call sign 'N975B'. My goodness, that was about 55 years ago and 'whirlybirds' was the beginning of my fascination for helicopters. I have flown in many since then. Thanks 'Whirlybirds'.

I loved this show so much that my grandfather's gift on my 10th birthday was a helicopter flight in a Bell 47G over Long Beach Harbor. WOW. I still grin like the Cheshire Cat just thinking of it...

This was my favorite TV show. So much so that I went into Army Aviation and flew Huey gunships for a year in Vietnam. How about that? Lucky I came out in one piece. Talk about being influenced by TV.

My dad, William Loose, wrote the theme but was sued by the Air Force for copyright infringement. The count sided with the Air Force saying it was too similar to "Off we go into the wild blue yonder".

This show WAS my childhood! My sister and I would sit in front of the TV and whoever was flying on the TV got to hold the tinker-toy stick. I was Chuck and she was P.T. I'm trying to figure out how to make this a ringtone. Thanks for posting it. At almost 55 years old I still dream of learning to fly a helicopter.

Loved the show as a kid! It's astonishing to think that they made 111 episodes! Ken Tobey handled the part so well that some of us real pilots were surprised to learn later on that he wasn't actually one. But in our minds he always will be.

Whirlybirds came out before I was born, but I watched it in reruns along with
Sky King on Saturday afternoons in the late 60s, it helped start my love for
aircraft and all things aviation related. I wonder how many kids became pilots
because of shows like this. I think we could use some shows that portray
some positive productive role models for kids today.

same as me i watched whirlybirds living in denton,texas they made the bell 47 in ft.worth,texas about 40 miles from me. i too became in love with the bell 47 as well. lucky for me i got to fly in one 2 times. would love to again and get the controls this time.

Ripcord, Sky King, Sea Hunt, Whirlybirds !!! I actually ended up doing all of them,, for years !! It was great ! My only regret now is never getting into space. :(

in our area, it was one of those syndicated shows that came on at 7 p.m., before the network kicked in at 7:30. we were able to get along without Vanna White somehow. also watched Rescue 8, Ripcord, and Sea Hunt.

This show spark my lifelove with avation. I became a aircraft mechanic. in the Navy. But whe I got to sent to Helo squadron. I dscovered that Helos are a nightmare yto maintain. Thanls for posting thi clip

@Cool2BCeltic Quite, it was a weekly sales pitch really ... but what a beautiful looking flying machine. The perspex bubble was surely futuristic for those days, and the Bell made a lovely swishy chopper sound too. My bro and I watched avidly back then.

It inspired me as well. Unfortunately, I was never able to become a pilot, so I lived vicariouosly through my cousin who flew Hueys and and an S-76. Thanks for your comment!

N975B was not a Bell 47 Ranger helicopter. That honor goes to N2838B, the Bell 47 helicopter that joined the Whirlybirds fleet beginning in season #2, episode #40. The first season of Whirlybirds was filmed at the old Santa Susanna Airport. The second and third seasons were filmed at the old San Fernando Airport. Longwood Field was more suburban than desert.

Thanks! Per Wikipedia: The two helicopter types used were Bell models, a 47G and a 47J Ranger; the tail numbers were N975B and N2838B (and N1538B as back-up), respectively. In reality, many helicopters played the role of N975B. Other Bell 47Gs owned by National Helicopter Service were used in the filming with "N975B" decals covering their actual registrations.

Trivia for SciFi fans: Majel Barrett (Star Trek) was in one episode 'The Black Maria' playing - you guessed it, a computer. No, a nurse. Also, Whirlybirds, like Star Trek, was produced by Desilu.

Had a medical aid call for a broken ankle. When I got to the call a lady was on the ground but I looked at the man with her as if I knew him. He noticed me staring at him while we were waiting for the ambulance to arrived. He said, Hi my name is Ken Toby, I then said Whirlybirds, I knew I had seen you somewhere. Ken Toby was a very nice man and I am glad I got to meet him. The lady's ankle was fine, and she had no broken bones.

@carycomic1 I think the Whirlybirds (which I watched every week) was a syndicated show like Sky King, Lone Ranger, Range Rider etc from the beginning. I don't think it was ever on the networks.

This prog inspired me too have loved Helicopters ever since !!!!! I started my ppl(H) on my 50th birthday !! but no funds to continue my hrs .. :-( I dont like the big Chenooks etc -- a little Robinson or WhirlyBird equivalent is fine with me :-)
