Youth
White Apple Tree Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The smell of cigarettes stain the backseat
We stick around because we don't care
None of us have had to work for nothing
Let's go to Tyler's house and waste some air

One more forty
One more year
What a waste of youth grandeur

Let's take a trip on a road to nowhere
With a car your parents own
Let's make a stop at every Starbucks
Let's complain about how service is slow

One more problem
One more Schmear
Racing Rats are more sincere

One more last drink
Before you drive home

We'll watch Fight Club till four in the morning
Talk about that Pixies song at the end
We spew ramblings of something exotic
And what will happen when our lives begin

One more forty
One more year
What a waste of youth grandeur

One more last drink
Before you drive home

Overall Meaning

The song Youth by White Apple Tree is a melancholic anthem about the struggles of growing up and facing the realities of life. The first stanza of the song talks about the carefree attitude that the youth possess towards life. The "smell of cigarettes stain the backseat" shows that the youth are not afraid of being rebellious and doing things that are not necessarily good for them. They "stick around because they don't care" and have not faced any real challenges in life. They are lured into wasting their time and energy at Tyler's house because, well, why not? It is a representation of the apathy that the youth possess towards the future, and they revel in the present without thinking about the consequences.

The chorus "One more forty, one more year, what a waste of youth grandeur" points out the futility of the youth's actions, and how they will look back at their wasted youth with regret. The line "One more year" is significant because it is a reminder that they are getting older and should start thinking about their future. The youth, however, cannot see this and are blinded by their carefree outlook towards life.

The second stanza talks about the desire of the youth to explore the world, albeit aimlessly. The line "let's take a trip on a road to nowhere" shows that they do not have a clear direction in life and are just meandering through it. They use a car that their parents own to go on this journey, which is a glaring reminder that they are still dependent on their parents. The chorus is repeated, emphasizing the point of how they are wasting their youth.

The last part of the song talks about how the youth spend their time, discussing the movie Fight Club and "ramblings of something exotic." They are not worried about anything other than their immediate surroundings and the present moment. The line "and what will happen when our lives begin" is a testament to how the youth are not prepared for the future and do not have a clear plan for it. The song ends with "one more last drink before you drive home," showing that the youth are still not taking their future seriously.
