The Power & the Glory
White Lies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What if I were to disobey
Give you back the power
Would I be punished like a child
And left on my own
Would you think me ungrateful
And send me away
If I couldn't make you happy
Cause empty handed leaving
As I was when I came
Tiptoeing through the rubble
And running through the flames
And running through the flames
And running through the flames
And running through the flames

What if I were to disobey
Give you back the power
Would you be the one to turn your back
And cast the first stone
Would you think me a coward
Though I be the hero
And come home a hero

I gave you back your power
I gave you back your glory
Well really I hadn't noticed
Until I had the power to give it all back
Until I felt the glory
When the buildings collapsed
When the buildings collapsed

Cause empty handed leaving
As I was when I came
Tiptoeing through the rubble
And running through the flames
And running through the flames
And running through the flames
And running through the flames

I gave you back your power
I gave you back your glory
Well really I hadn't noticed
Until I had the power to give it all back
Until I felt the glory
When the buildings collapsed
When the buildings collapsed

I gave you back your power
I gave you back your glory

I gave you back your glory
I gave you back your glory

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of White Lies’s The Power & the Glory depict a scenario in which one is willing to surrender power back to the person who bestowed it, but is unsure of the consequences that may arise from doing so. The song uses a hypothetical situation in which one “disobeys” and gives back the power to the original giver, questioning whether the act would be perceived as ungratefulness and result in banishment from their current situation. The singer is conflicted between giving up power and autonomy, and being able to make the person who granted it happy. The description of “empty handed leaving” and “tiptoeing through the rubble” suggest that the act of relinquishing control was not without struggle or sacrifice.

The second half of the song seems to reveal the consequences of the hypothetical scenario, as the singer declares that they “gave you back your power…your glory,” and finally noticing it after “the buildings collapsed.” Despite any potential consequences, the liberation of relinquishing control allowed the singer to recognize the true nature of the person who granted them power. Whether this liberation comes from a personal relationship, political scenario, or other situation, White Lies leaves the interpretation to the listener with poignant and thought-provoking lyrics.

Ritual is a seriously underrated album

@albernererhelge

+TheSpeerosity well... it's their weakest, that's the fact. it's very good though

@nina_basss

I don't think it is their weakest. I love how dark and experimental it is.

@wuu7821

the issue with Ritual is that it comes no where near To Lose My Life, if it was their debut album or released after Big TV it may have done better
