Love Exchange Failure
White Ward Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Empty streets wallow in night lights
Crowded for a day, they rest
But lonely strangers always gaze
At every turn, they do their best

While someone's running from themselves
They often want to save some time
Instead, they make an old mistake
Passionately commit a crime

Feeble flesh is torn apart
Blood and dust are turned to mud
Once was bright — will never shine
I gift you with what was mine

Take my pains and leave a prayer
I am your most sinful player
The redemption for my past
Turned your smile into rust

A child is drowned within
Entombed in a pool of tears
A grownup is buried alive
And lives a life that's full of nightmares

A victim's always innocent
A murderer is sleepless
All my tears are pushing me
To the loss of empathy

I delegate my weaknesses to you
And carve a hymn to tyranny

With nails that go deep inside your chest
I wish you all the best

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Love Exchange Failure" by White Ward paint a bleak picture of society's lonely and desperate individuals. The song starts with the description of empty streets that only come to life for a day before falling back into silence. The "lonely strangers" are unable to break free from their isolation, and despite their efforts, they remain trapped in their own minds. The lyrics evoke a sense of trying to run from oneself, only to end up making the same mistakes that lead to more pain and suffering.

The theme of pain and suffering is continued throughout the song. The "feeble flesh" is constantly torn apart, symbolizing the physical and emotional pain that people experience. The gift of pain is offered to the listener, allowing them to experience and understand the suffering that the singer has endured. The lyrics also depict the internal struggles of individuals, highlighting the conflicts between the child and grownup within oneself. The victim is innocent, and the murderer is sleepless, haunted by the guilt of their actions.

There is a harrowing sense of delegating one's weaknesses to others and the consequences of sharing that burden. The singer carves a hymn to tyranny, reflecting the destructive nature of sharing pain and causing harm to others. The final statement of wishing the listener "all the best" is both ironic and bitter, as it's clear that the singer is causing more harm than good. In conclusion, "Love Exchange Failure" presents a bleak view of the human condition where pain, suffering, and loneliness prevail.

Yes, I heard the sirens, they were going the wrong way. I could only hope my rusty Obregón .45 would give me a fighting chance.

It was my fault for letting my armpit sweat rust her. "Obregón" was her given name, but she was "Alejandra" to me. I just couldn't keep her away from my heart.

She had been recently cleaned and oiled, she was ready to kill. And I had made her a promise, so we both were in this together. Before I holstered her I had to lit a cigarette and gaze into that black metal she was made of; the abyss.

So I just stood there while I smoked, close to the balcony in case I needed to jump and had to cheat death. I took a long drag on my cigarette and threw it off the balcony afterwards. I knew they were already outside my building as the burning ashes fell on a man's head and he yelled "carajo!".

Then Alejandra told me to jump.

Why is everyone hating the cover art? It perfectly captures the bleak stagnation of metropolitan nights.

The last three songs on this album are probably some of my favorite moments in music, ever. This fusion of jazz and atmospheric black metal is just sublime.
