Behold
Whitecross Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So many choices for a man to make,
So many ways that he can go,
But all the kingdoms in a thousand worlds,
Could not replace the peace I know.

The things of earth can never satisfy
The hunger deep in me.
Behold the Lamb of God,
Reaching out His nail-scarred hand.
He wants to lift you up,
Give you strength so you can stand.

It's only natural for a man to dream,
To reach for stars above himself.
My life was cluttered with shattered dreams,
Before I learned to seek your will.

You are the rain that falls on thirsty ground
And the light that opens windows in my soul.

Overall Meaning

In "Behold" by Whitecross, the singer acknowledges that life is full of choices and paths to take, yet despite what the world has to offer, the peace that comes from knowing the Lamb of God cannot be replaced. The singer also realizes that earthly possessions and desires will never bring true satisfaction to the depths of the soul. Therefore, the message conveyed here is that seeking the will of God and accepting His hand is the only way to attain the peace and satisfaction one seeks in life.

The second verse continues with an encouraging tone for listeners to aim high for their dreams, but only through seeking God's will can true progress be made. The metaphor of rain falling on thirsty ground and light opening windows in the soul are powerful and vivid images that represent the transformative power of God.

What's interesting about the song "Behold" is that it was released in 1987, which was during the peak of hair metal and glam rock. While Whitecross was a Christian metal band, their sound closely resembled the secular bands of the time. This allowed them to attract a diverse group of fans, including those who were not necessarily religious or part of the Christian metal scene.

"thought the fight was fixed" rather than "thought the light was fixed". The imagery in the song is all about fighting in a ring and a fixed fight is not a fair one.
