Goodbye Cruel World
Whitecross Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every moment, even though you're gone
I don't have to fear
'Cause it's very clear, there's a reason
And I know for sure, in a season,
Time will bring the cure
For I am strong and you're the Prince of Peace

Just the other day, my dear friend passed away
Now I'm here today. And I know I,
I know I need to pick up and carry on
Carry on

Won't be long until I see him, yeah!

And every moment, even though you're gone
I don't have to fear
'Cause it's very clear, there's a reason
And I know for sure, in a season
Time will bring the cure

Where you are is where we all long to be
The cage will soon be opened and we will all be free

Goodbye cruel world
Oh yeah
Goodbye cruel world
Oh, yes

Now I'm trying, oh to face the truth
And really see
Oh I know I need to be set free
From all the things overwhelming to me

Where you are is where we all long to be
The cage will soon be opened and we will all be free

Goodbye cruel world
Oh yeah
Goodbye cruel world
Oh, yes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Whitecross’s “Goodbye Cruel World” reflect the longing for a world beyond the current one, where peace and freedom reign, and death does not have the last word. The song is written as a tribute to a dear friend who has passed away, but the lyrics suggest a deeper meaning, resonating with the hope of Christians for a life beyond this earthly existence.

The opening lines suggest that even though the friend is gone, the singer does not have to fear because there is a reason, a purpose behind their departure. The belief that there is a Prince of Peace who rules over all, including death, gives the singer the confidence that time will eventually bring the cure, the healing that is needed to move on. The lyrics acknowledge the pain of loss, but they also look towards a future when the singer will see their friend again.

The second verse addresses the singer's struggle to face the truth and be set free from the overwhelming things in life. The repetition of the line “Where you are is where we all long to be” reinforces the idea that the afterlife is a place of peace and freedom, and it echoes the words of Jesus in John 14:2-3: “In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

Overall, “Goodbye Cruel World” is a song about hope in the face of loss and a reminder of the promise of eternal life for those who believe.

Como diria o AC/DC "Long Way To The Top".
