Don't Break My Heart Again
Whitesnake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm gonna take it to the limit of my love,
Before I turn and walk away
I've had enough of holding on
The promises of yesterday
Every day of my life, it seems,
Trouble's knocking at my door,
It's hard to try and satisfy
When you don't know what you're fighting for

Time and again I sing your song,
But, I've been runnin' on empty far too long
I've had enough holdin' on to the past,
Make no mistake, it could be your last

Don't break my heart again, like you did before
Don't break my heart again, I couldn't take anymore

I never hide the feeling inside,
And though I'm standing my back to the wall,
I know that even in a summer love
A little bit of rain must fall
But, every road I take I know
Where it's gonna lead me to,
Because I've traveled every highway
And they all keep coming back to you

Time and again I sing your song,
But, I've been runnin' on empty far too long
I've had enough holdin' on to the past,
Make no mistake, it could be your last

Don't break my heart again, like you did before
Don't break my heart again, I couldn't take anymore
Don't break my heart

Don't break my heart again, like you did before
Don't break my heart again, I couldn't take anymore

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Whitesnake's "Don't Break My Heart Again" express a plea from the singer to their significant other to not hurt them again. The first verse sets up the scene, with the singer declaring that they've reached their breaking point, and they can't continue holding onto broken promises anymore. They're tired of constantly fighting and trying to make things work without a clear sense of purpose.

In the second verse, the singer acknowledges that they've been trying to make things work for a while now, but they're running on empty. They've had enough of living in the past and they know that they might not be able to hold on this time. The chorus is a straightforward appeal to not break their heart again, as they cannot handle any more pain or disappointment.

The last verse implies that the singer has tried several paths in their quest for love but they've all led them back to their partner, indicating that they're truly in love and don't want to lose it, but they cannot continue if the pain continues. The song captures the pain and uncertainty of a relationship on the brink of ending, yet hopeful for a better future if the other party can truly commit to not hurting them again.

Just learned of the passing of the amazing guitar player Bernie Marsden. One of my all time favourite Whitesnake songs wouldn't be possible without his riffs/solos. Love and condolences from 🇧🇷! 🤘💔
