RATS
Whitey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Excuse me please, should I feel glee?
Is everybody walking to sleep?
Softly, softly, don't make a sound.
The bodys are walking around.
Wake me, wake me, I want to wake up.
I've had enough and I want to wake up.
True too tired to tell.
And everyones inside themself.
And everyones out for themselves.

Your alone, just like me.
You don't want to hear no questions,
You just want to be.
You can believe all.
Don't bother me.
You don't want to hear no questions,
You don't want to hear it.
This is wrong,
This is wrong,
This is wrong,
This is wrong,
This is wrong.

Falling, falling, we got to wake up.
The bells are ringing, and they never shut up.
Help me, help me, I'm stuck in a dream.
Well no-one listens, no-one knows what I mean.
Wake me, wake me, I want to wake up.
I've had enough and I want to wake up.
True too tired to tell.
And everyones inside themself.
And everyones out for themselves.

Your alone, just like me.
You don't want to hear no questions,
You just want to be.
You can believe all.
Don't bother me.
You don't want to hear no questions,
You don't want to hear it.
This is wrong,
This is wrong,
This is wrong,

This is wrong,
This is wrong.

Overall Meaning

The song "Rats" by Whitey is a commentary on the conformity, apathy, and self-centeredness of society. The first verse starts with the singer questioning whether they should feel happy about the situation around them, where people seem to be sleepwalking through life. The second line amplifies this notion of people being unaware of their surroundings. The following lines describe a sense of fear of being caught or discovered, and the need to keep quiet, to not disturb the status quo. The chorus where the singer pleads to be woken up from this nightmare, where everyone is just looking out for themselves without a care for others, highlights their frustration with the indifference around them.

The second verse reiterates the previous sentiment, where the singer feels isolated and alone in their belief of standing against this current societal attitude. The line, "You can believe all. Don't bother me," shows the singer's lack of interest in hearing others' opinions or questions. The following lines repeat the chorus, where the singer and the listener are urged to wake up from this state of apathy and take notice of the world around them.

Excuse me please, should I be oblique?
Is everybody walking asleep?
Softly, softly, don't make a sound
The bodies are walking around
Wake me, wake me, I want to wake up
I've had enough and I want to wake up
In truth, I'm too tired to tell
Everyone's inside themself
And everyone's out for themselves

You're alone, just like me
You don't want to hear no questions
You just want to be
You can't believe
Oh, don't bother me

I don't know why your channel isn't popular, this is like a work of art!

@thethundermash247

All of these tracks are just higher quality repuploads man has been making waves for almost 20 years outside of YouTube. But yes he doesn’t get the recognition he should

@user-co2zz7yu8q

"art" doesn't mean anything more you should say "transformative experience" or if you wanna go simple "high quality art"

@we-must-live

@Ĵ Ƒ Ɵ ehh… he’s more or less implying that most current music isn’t deserving of the title of ‘art’ - and he’s right!

but yes, even if the garbage some ‘musicians’ spew out nowadays is considered “art”, then this is certainly VERY high quality art!
