North Wind
Whitman Slim Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well once I met a pretty little girl and
She was fair to see
I fell in love with that pretty little girl
She fell in love with me
I kissed her on her dimpled chin
While stars in heaven did play
But along came a howlin' that old
North Wind and carried her away

North Wind
North Wind bring my baby back again
North Wind where did she go nobody but you will ever know
It seems I hear her callin' me and when I answer back
I find it's just that old North Wind
A whistlin' around my shack
Each night before I go to sleep down on my knees I pray
That the old North Wind a come a howlin' by
And carry me away

North Wind

North Wind bring my baby back again
North Wind where did she go nobody but you will ever know

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Whitman Slim's song “North Wind” describe a narrator's relationship with a girl who was taken away by the North Wind. The song starts with the singer's fond remembrances of meeting a pretty little girl who reciprocated his feelings. He kissed her on her dimpled chin while the stars shone bright in heaven. The gentle imagery of the first verse is suddenly disrupted by the howling wind that comes along and takes his loved one away from him. The singer is left alone, with the wind as the only witness to his loss. He calls out to the North Wind, asking it to bring his baby back to him. He prays for the wind to carry him away too, hoping for his own escape from the pain of losing his love.

The lyrics of “North Wind” evoke a sense of longing and desperation brought about by a sudden tragedy. The song's themes of love, loss, and the call of death are all conveyed through the howling of the North Wind. The wind is symbolic of the inevitability of change and loss, and also of the hope for a new beginning. The singer's prayer of asking the North Wind to come and take him away can be seen as an expression of his desire to reunite with his love, no matter the cost.

In Odessa, when I was in the first grade, thiswas my favorite song. My mother took cigars, and candy to the radio station to play this song every morning before I went to school....I still love it and I am 67. I still love Slim Whitman, and I cried when he died!
