Landslide
Whitney & Shannon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I took my love and I took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Till the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older and I'm getting older too

Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older and I'm getting older too

Well, I'm getting older too

Oh, I took my love and took it down
Yeah, I climb a mountain and I turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide brought me down

Oh the landslide'll bring you down

Overall Meaning

The song "Landslide" by Whitney & Shannon is about reflecting on the changes and challenges in life brought about by the passing of time. The first verse describes a journey up a mountain that ends in a landslide. This can be interpreted as a metaphor for striving for success, but sometimes encountering obstacles beyond our control. The second verse poses deep questions about love and the self, particularly the difficulty of retaining childlike innocence and joy in the face of life's challenges. The chorus expresses fear of change and the inevitability of aging, yet also acknowledges the growth that comes with time.

The repeated line "I've been afraid of changin' / 'Cause I've built my life around you" suggests a relationship, perhaps a romantic one, in which the singer has become dependent on another person. The singer acknowledges the need to adapt and evolve as time passes, but also fears losing what they have built. The final verse repeats the imagery of the first verse, emphasizing the cyclical nature of life and the idea that even after facing failure or disappointment, one can pick themselves up and try again.

Overall, "Landslide" is a poignant reminder that change and growth are inevitable parts of life, even when they are difficult to accept.

Right!? I’ve been a hardcore Stevie Nicks fan since I was 14 back in the early 80s. I’ve heard some hack job remakes but wow- this is a compliment to Nicks hauntingly beautiful songs! I almost felt like I was floating during the harmonizing!

You need to listen to the one that was sung in the first or second season of "The Sing Off"... It was... butter. The singers cry at the end.
